Short East Africa Birding Itinerary: Six Days Across Uganda and Kenya

This six day plan pairs the swamps and forest edge near Entebbe with the Rift Valley lakes near Nairobi, giving a taste of two countries and two very different bird communities.

Short birding trips work best when they stay close to gateways. Entebbe sits on Lake Victoria and Nairobi sits near the Rift Valley lakes, so both ends of this plan need little driving and leave long mornings for watching. Tanzania is left out on purpose, because adding a third country to six days would turn a birding trip into a transport exercise.

The outline below shows one full itinerary, then pacing variations. It belongs to the set introduced in the birding combinations guide, where medium and long versions are also described.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Uganda

Uganda Days: Swamp and Forest Edge

The Uganda leg is built around Mabamba Swamp, where narrow canoes glide through papyrus and water lilies in search of the shoebill, along with jacanas, gonoleks and kingfishers. Sightings are never guaranteed, so the second morning is kept free in case the first attempt is unlucky. Mabira Forest or the gardens at Entebbe supply forest-edge birds without a long drive. See also Entebbe to Mabamba for the short transfer.

Kenya

Kenya Days: Lakes in the Rift Valley

Kenya follows with two contrasting lakes. Lake Naivasha is freshwater, with papyrus fringes, fish eagles, cormorants and kingfishers, while Lake Nakuru is alkaline and known for flamingos, pelicans and a mix of woodland and grassland birds. Flamingo numbers change with water levels and feeding conditions, so expect variety rather than a fixed spectacle. Our Nairobi to Naivasha page explains the drive.

Pacing

Pacing and Transfers

The itinerary has only one flight and short drives, which protects the early mornings that matter most to birders. Check current schedules with your operator before fixing the day of the Entebbe to Nairobi flight, since timings change. Pack binoculars in hand luggage and a lightweight waterproof for boat trips. Most days begin with breakfast in the dark and end with an unhurried evening, so bring a light torch and expect modest walking distances.

Optional

Optional Swaps and Extensions

If you prefer forest, replace Mabira with an extra night near Kibale, though that adds a long road day. To add Tanzania, extend to the medium itinerary. Travellers wanting mammals can swap Lake Nakuru for a night in the Masai Mara, using our Nairobi to Masai Mara guide. Photographers should consider an extra morning at Naivasha for boat light.
