Nairobi to the Masai Mara: Choosing Between the Road and the Air Transfer

Most travellers choose between a long scenic drive from Nairobi and a short scheduled flight from Wilson Airport, and the right choice depends on time, comfort and how much of Kenya you want to see on the way.

The Masai Mara lies in south-western Kenya, and getting there is a real part of the trip. The road crosses the Rift Valley escarpment and open farmland, while the air route gives a quick view of the landscape and puts you at a camp airstrip within a short flight.

This page is a decision guide for the transfer. For the technical background see how to get to the Masai Mara and the Nairobi to Masai Mara road and flight guide.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

What

What the Road Journey Is Like

The drive leaves Nairobi through busy suburbs, climbs towards the Rift Valley escarpment with long views over the valley floor and continues through highland farmland and the market town of Narok. The final stretch to the reserve gates is on rougher tracks, where a safari vehicle with good clearance is essential. Roadworks and traffic mean an early start is wise. Many operators add a game drive on arrival, so the transfer becomes the first part of the safari.

What

What the Flight Is Like

Scheduled light-aircraft flights leave from Nairobi Wilson Airport, not the main international airport, and land on airstrips close to camps. The flight is short, scenic and avoids the rough road. Luggage limits are strict and soft bags are required. Check current schedules with your operator, who will arrange the flight and the camp transfer from the airstrip. See flying safaris in East Africa and Kenya domestic flights.

Mixing

Mixing the Two

Many travellers drive one way and fly the other. This gives you the scenery and a flexible arrival on the way in, then a fast return in time for an international departure. It also reduces fatigue and lets you see more of the country. Ask your operator to build in a buffer on the day you leave if you are connecting to an international flight.

What

What to Book and What to Ask

Book the transfer as part of the safari package and ask which gate and camp you will use, where the vehicle meets you, what luggage limit applies, what happens if a flight is delayed and how long the transfer from the airstrip to camp takes. Check whether the vehicle has a pop-up roof, which helps with game viewing on arrival. See where to stay in the Masai Mara and where to stay in the conservancies.

Seasons

Seasons and Road Conditions

In the dry months the road is dusty but faster, while in the long rains the final tracks can become slippery and slow. During migration season traffic into the reserve is heavier. Flights are generally reliable but depend on weather and daylight. See the Masai Mara best-time guide.

Who

Who Each Option Suits

Choose the road if you enjoy scenery, travel in a group or family, or want to stop at the escarpment viewpoint. Choose the air route for a short stay, if you are sensitive to long drives or want more time at camp. For a longer trip, see Masai Mara itineraries and where to stay in Nairobi before the transfer.
