Mombasa to Watamu: Along the North Coast by Road or Air
Watamu lies north of Mombasa on the Indian Ocean coast and is reached by a scenic road of a couple of hours or a short flight to Malindi.
The journey follows the coastal highway through palm-lined towns, creeks and farmland. Most beach travellers arrive at Moi International Airport in Mombasa and transfer by road, while some fly directly to Malindi.
This page explains the options and what to arrange. For the beach itself see the Watamu beach guide and where to stay in Watamu and Malindi.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.
At a glance
- By road: About two hours, depending on traffic
- By air: Scheduled flights to Malindi, then a short drive
- Route: Coastal highway through Mtwapa and Kilifi
- Book: Private transfer or shuttle
- Pairs with: Malindi and Gedi Ruins
The Road North
The road leaves Mombasa, crosses the Nyali bridge or uses the northern approach and continues through Mtwapa and Kilifi. Near Kilifi the highway crosses the creek on a bridge with fine views, and the drive then passes through farmland and coastal forest before turning off for Watamu. Traffic around Mombasa and the towns can slow the first part, so an early start helps. The coast is humid, so a vehicle with air conditioning makes the journey more comfortable.
Flying Instead
Scheduled flights serve Malindi from Nairobi and sometimes from other airports, and Malindi lies a short drive from Watamu. Flying suits travellers coming from a safari and wanting to skip the long road, though check schedules with your operator. See Kenya domestic flights and getting around the Kenya coast.
What to Book
Most hotels offer transfers, and operators arrange private cars. Ask about pick-up points at Mombasa airport, luggage space, a stop for lunch or a cash machine, and how late a transfer can run after a delayed flight. Public minibuses are possible but slower and less suited to heavy luggage.
Stops Along the Way
Consider Gedi Ruins near Watamu, Kilifi creek viewpoints and roadside stalls selling mangoes, cashews and coconuts. Mamba Village and local crafts may be on the route. Keep stops short to arrive before dark. See the Malindi guide.
Seasons and Conditions
The coast has long rains in roughly April to June, when downpours can slow traffic. The northeast and southeast monsoon winds shape the sea more than the road. See the Mombasa and Kenyan coast guide.
Combining With Safari
Many travellers combine Tsavo or the Mara with Watamu as a beach finish. See Mombasa to Tsavo East and the Kenya safari with Diani and Lamu combination.
Timing Your Arrival
Flights into Mombasa often land in the afternoon or evening, and the road north is best driven in daylight, so many travellers spend a first night near the airport or in Mombasa and set off the next morning. If your flight lands early, a direct transfer is straightforward and leaves time for a swim before dinner. On the way back, allow a generous buffer before an international departure, because coastal traffic and bridge queues are unpredictable. Ask your hotel to confirm the departure time the evening before and to provide a bottle of water for the journey.
Beach Season and Sea Conditions
The north coast has a warm sea for most of the year, and the monsoon winds bring seasonal differences in seaweed, waves and visibility rather than any change to the road. The long rains, roughly April to June, are the quietest months and bring heavy downpours that clear quickly. Marine park rules, tide times and snorkelling conditions are best checked with your hotel. See the Kenya coast diving and snorkelling guide for what the water offers.
Who Each Option Suits
Choose the road if you are already on the coast or want flexibility. Choose the air route if you are coming from inland and want to save time. Families may prefer a private car. See where to stay on the north coast.
