Nairobi to Arusha: Crossing from Kenya into Tanzania by Road or Air
Travellers moving between Kenya and Tanzania usually cross by road at Namanga on a long day of driving, or fly from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro or Arusha to save time.
This is the classic link between a Kenyan and a Tanzanian safari. The road passes Maasai rangeland, volcanic hills and, in clear weather, views towards Kilimanjaro, while the border adds paperwork and waiting that need to be planned into the day.
This page compares the options and explains what to book. See also the Kenya and Tanzania route and border guide and getting around East Africa.

Road Route in Outline
The road leaves Nairobi southwards through Athi River and Kajiado, crosses dry plains with distant views of the Rift Valley and reaches the border town of Namanga. After the border it continues on the Tanzanian side towards Arusha, with Mount Meru rising ahead. Surfaces are generally good, but roadworks and trucks can slow progress, and the whole journey is best treated as a full day. Start early to arrive before dark.
The Namanga Border
Namanga is a one-stop style crossing where you complete exit and entry formalities in sequence. Carry your passport, any visa already obtained and proof of onward travel if requested. Rules on visas and health certificates change, so check the official immigration and health sources before travel and see the East Africa visa guide and health and vaccinations. Vehicles often change at the border or continue under a cross-border permit arranged by the operator.
Shuttle Buses and Private Transfers
Tourist shuttles run daily between the two cities and are the cheapest regular option, with fixed departure times and shared seats. Private transfers cost more but offer flexibility, safari-style vehicles and stops. Ask what the shuttle covers, how luggage is handled and whether pick-up is from your hotel. A private driver is wise for families or groups carrying camera equipment.
Flying Between the Two Countries
Direct flights link Nairobi with Kilimanjaro International Airport, and some services reach Arusha. Flying avoids the border queue and the long drive, though you still need airport time. Check current schedules with your operator and see Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha for the onward leg.
What to Book and Ask
Ask whether the transfer includes the border helper, what time the vehicle leaves, where it stops for food, whether it has air conditioning and what happens if the border is slow. Confirm your first night in Arusha. See where to stay in Arusha and the Arusha city guide.
Seasons and Conditions
The route is open all year. In the long rains, roughly March to May, spray and slow trucks add time. Dry-season dust can be heavy. See the East Africa best-time guide.
Making the Day Comfortable
A long border day is easier with a little preparation. Carry water, snacks, small notes for toilet stops, a charged phone and a pen for immigration forms. Keep passports and any health documents in an accessible pouch rather than the main luggage, and wear layers because mornings in Nairobi can be cool while the border plains warm quickly. If you are continuing straight into a safari, ask whether the operator can arrange a mid-journey lunch stop with a clean toilet and shade, and avoid scheduling anything demanding on the evening of arrival.
Who Each Option Suits
Road suits budget travellers, groups and those who enjoy overland scenery. Flights suit short trips and anyone uneasy with border waits. See the Arusha safari gateway guide and Amboseli National Park guide if you stop on the way.
