Nairobi to Nanyuki: Road, Air and the Gateway to Mount Kenya and Laikipia

Nanyuki sits on the equator on the western flank of Mount Kenya, and visitors reach it by a half-day drive through the central highlands or a short flight from Nairobi.

The town is the gateway to Laikipia, Mount Kenya and several conservancies, so most travellers pass through it on the way to a camp rather than staying in town. Choosing between road and air depends on your timetable and how much of the highlands you want to see.

This page explains the options, what to book and how the transfer fits a wider itinerary. See also the Nanyuki guide and Nairobi to Mount Kenya.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Road Route in Outline

The road heads north from Nairobi through the satellite towns and then into the central highlands, passing farmland, coffee and tea country and busy market towns before reaching the foothills of Mount Kenya. The surface is mostly tarmac and the journey is comfortable, though traffic around Nairobi and the larger towns can be slow. An early departure keeps the day flexible. Mount Kenya often appears on the right in clear weather, and morning is the best time for views.

Flying

Flying to Nanyuki

Short flights run from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Nanyuki and to airstrips on nearby conservancies. They save hours and offer views over the highlands and the Aberdares. Light-aircraft luggage limits apply, so pack in soft bags. Schedules change, so rely on your operator for current times. See Kenya domestic flights and flying safaris.

Stops

Stops Worth Making

The equator marker near Nanyuki is a popular photo stop, and roadside markets sell fruit and crafts. Some travellers add a coffee or tea estate visit, or a viewpoint over the Aberdare range. Keep stops short if you want to arrive at your conservancy for an afternoon drive. See Nairobi to the Aberdares.

What

What to Book

Ask your operator or lodge how the vehicle will meet you, which conservancy gate or airstrip you will use, whether the transfer includes a game drive on arrival and what luggage limits apply on flights. Confirm the onward plan to Mount Kenya, Laikipia or Samburu. See where to stay in Laikipia and where to stay on Mount Kenya.

Connecting

Connecting Onward

Nanyuki links well with Ol Pejeta, Lewa and Samburu, and with the Aberdares. A common pattern flies one way and drives the other. See Nairobi to Ol Pejeta, Nairobi to Lewa and Nairobi to Samburu.

Seasons

Seasons and Road Notes

The highland road is usable all year, but heavy rain in the long rains can slow traffic and create mist near the mountain. Dry months give clearer mountain views. See the Mount Kenya best-time guide.

Pacing

Pacing the Day

Leaving Nairobi by mid-morning at the latest keeps the drive comfortable and brings you to the foothills of Mount Kenya in time for lunch and an afternoon activity. If you fly, you can reach a conservancy for a late morning drive and add a full extra safari day. Travellers heading on to Samburu often drive north from Nanyuki the next morning rather than rushing the same afternoon, which avoids arriving in the dark and keeps the itinerary relaxed. Whatever you choose, tell your operator about any early flight home so that the final transfer has a generous buffer.

Who

Who It Suits

The road suits families, groups and travellers who like highland scenery. The air route suits short stays and anyone limited by time. For a combined plan, see the Mount Kenya and Laikipia itinerary and how to get to Ol Pejeta and Laikipia.
