Best Time for East Africa Birding Combinations: Month by Month Across Three Countries
Resident birds can be seen in every month, but the combined window of roughly November to April adds Palearctic migrants, while the drier months of June to October ease access and walking.
The three countries share a broad pattern of rainy and dry seasons, yet the details differ by region. Uganda has two rainy seasons, Kenya and northern Tanzania have long and short rains, and lake basins can create their own weather. For birders the choice is a trade-off between easier travel in dry weather and richer activity during and after rain.
This page gives general month-by-month guidance for the combination described in the birding combinations guide. Patterns vary from year to year, so treat them as guidance, not promises.

Resident Birds and Migrants
Most of the headline species are residents, including turacos, hornbills, kingfishers and weavers, so a trip in any month can be rewarding. From roughly November to April, Palearctic migrants such as warblers and raptors from Europe and Asia join the local birds, which raises the day list. Weavers and other breeding birds often show their best plumage in or after rain. Our Uganda bird checklist and best months explains these patterns in more detail.
Uganda Through the Year
Uganda is greenest during its two rainy seasons, roughly March to May and September to November, and drier from December to February and June to August. Forest trails are easier in dry weather, while swamp boat trips work in most months. See best time to visit Uganda, Kibale in the dry season and Kibale in the rainy season.
Kenya Through the Year
Kenya has long rains around March to May and shorter rains around November. The Rift Valley lakes change with water level, and flamingo numbers vary, so ask your guide for current conditions. Dry months suit the Mara and Naivasha, while the green season favours breeding plumage. See best time to visit Kenya and Lake Nakuru best time.
Tanzania Through the Year
In northern Tanzania, June to October is dry and Tarangire concentrates wildlife along its river. November to April is greener, with migrants and breeding weavers. April and May are the quietest, with heavy rain. See best time to visit Tanzania and Tarangire best time.
Choosing the Combined Window
Many birders favour January and February, or June to early October, for dependable access, with November and December suiting those who value migrants and green landscapes. April and May reward flexible travellers who accept rain, because lodges are quiet and birds are active. Whatever the month, early starts matter, since activity peaks soon after dawn. Month Choices for Different Birders
Beginners often prefer the drier months, when trails are easier and birds are easy to find along rivers and lakes. Photographers value the green season for colour and breeding plumage, and the dry season for clear light. Keen listers may choose November to April to include migrants. Whichever you choose, mornings are best, so protect them from long travel. A specialist guide will adapt each day to the weather and to what is calling.
Planning Around the Calendar
Once you have a month in mind, match it to an itinerary: the short, medium and long plans can all be shifted by a few days to meet local conditions, and the route guide explains transfers.
