Arusha to Momella Gate and Mount Meru Trailheads: Route and Transfer Guide
The road from Arusha to Momella Gate is a short transfer by safari vehicle, normally completed within a morning, that leads to the lakes of Arusha National Park and the only trailhead for climbing Mount Meru.
Mount Meru dominates the skyline above Arusha, and the start of the climb is surprisingly close to town. Hikers usually leave the city in the morning, complete park registration at the gate and begin walking before midday, while safari visitors use the same route to reach the Momella Lakes.
This guide explains the journey, the formalities at the gate, what to book beforehand and how to fit the transfer into a Tanzania itinerary.

The Route in Outline
From Arusha the journey heads east along the main highway towards Moshi and Kilimanjaro, then turns north towards the national park near Usa River. The road continues through farmland and small villages on the slopes of Mount Meru before entering the park area. The tarmac gives way to rougher roads for the last part, so a robust vehicle is useful, especially in the rains. The scenery is green and agricultural, with coffee, banana and vegetable farms, and views of Meru and Kilimanjaro appear on clear mornings. See how to get to Arusha National Park for the general approach.
Timing and Pacing
The transfer is short enough that you can leave Arusha in the morning, but allow for town traffic, a stop for supplies and park formalities. Climbers should aim to reach the gate early so the first day of walking is not rushed. Safari visitors can combine the transfer with a game drive on the way in. If you are arriving from the airport, a night in Arusha before the climb helps with rest and kit checks; see Arusha city guide and Arusha safari gateway guide.
Gates and Park Formalities
Arusha National Park has more than one entrance, and the one used for Mount Meru climbs is Momella Gate, which is also the main access for the northern lakes. At the gate, guides complete registration and park procedures, and climbers are accompanied by an armed park ranger as required by park rules. Check with your operator which gate your plan uses, since a day safari may enter by a different gate. The staff will explain the rules, and you should keep your documents handy. Official tariffs apply and are included in the package your operator quotes.
Climbing Mount Meru From Momella
The Momella route is the established way up the mountain. It takes climbers through forest with a chance of monkeys and buffalo, along ridges and across a crater rim to the summit, with overnight stays in mountain huts. Most operators schedule several days, which allows gradual acclimatisation and a pre-dawn summit push. Meru is also popular as a warm-up before Kilimanjaro. Fitness, weather and altitude affect progress, and a registered operator with licensed guides is required. Read Mount Meru and Arusha National Park guide and compare options in Kilimanjaro routes compared.
Safari Use of the Route
Momella is also the heart of the park's lake district, where shallow alkaline lakes attract flamingos, waterbirds and buffalo, and the northern woodlands hold giraffe, monkeys and warthog. Day visitors from Arusha often combine a morning game drive with a picnic and a walk with a ranger. Seasons, activities and wildlife are covered in Arusha National Park activities, wildlife guide and birding.
What to Book and Pack
Book a registered operator who handles vehicle, guide, ranger, park arrangements and huts, and ask what is included. For the climb, pack layered clothing, waterproofs, a warm hat, gloves, broken-in boots, a headlamp and a day pack, and arrange any hire of poles or sleeping bags beforehand. For a day trip, bring sun protection, binoculars and water. Weather changes quickly on the mountain, so check the forecast with your guide. See East Africa packing list and health and vaccinations.
Fitting the Transfer Into an Itinerary
Most travellers connect Mount Meru with a safari circuit: climb first for acclimatisation, rest for a day, then head to Tarangire, Lake Manyara or the Serengeti. Others use the park as a half-day stop at the end of a trip before the airport. Avoid scheduling a climb on the day you arrive from a long flight.
