Tanzania 14-Day Safari Itinerary: North, South and the Coast

Fourteen days lets you see the northern circuit properly, add a quieter southern park and finish with a few days on the coast, without rushing between stops.

Two weeks is the sweet spot for Tanzania. It allows time for the Serengeti to reveal itself over several drives, a contrasting wilderness in the south and an unhurried beach finish.

The plan below is a full day-by-day outline, with suggestions for how to adapt it.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Shape of the Journey

A fourteen-day trip usually has three acts: the northern circuit, a flight south, and a rest by the sea. The northern circuit gives you elephants and baobabs in Tarangire, the crater floor of Ngorongoro and the open plains of the Serengeti. The southern park delivers a quieter, wilder feel with far fewer vehicles. The coast offers recovery. Learn how the two circuits differ in northern versus southern circuit and read flying safaris to understand how internal flights shape the plan.

Pacing

Pacing Advice

The first week contains several moves, so protect energy by keeping early nights and avoiding extra side trips. The three-night Serengeti block is the minimum for a satisfying stay, and four is better in peak migration months. Southern parks reward lingering, because their rhythm is slower. If you have only two weeks, avoid adding a third wilderness area, which would create too many transfers. For general advice see East Africa first-time safari guide.

Variations

Variations

Swap the south for chimpanzee trekking at Gombe or Mahale if primates appeal. See the Tanzania chimpanzee itinerary. Replace the coastal finish with Kilimanjaro-region hospitality or a short Lake Manyara stop. Travellers with specific wildlife interests, such as the migration, should time the northern section carefully. See the Tanzania migration itinerary.

Season

Season and Packing

Dry months from late June to October suit both the north and south, while green season trips offer lower demand and lush landscapes. Pack layers for cool crater mornings, soft bags for flights and sun protection for the coast. See best time to visit Tanzania and the packing list.

Booking

Booking Early

Fourteen-day trips involve multiple lodges, flights and transfers, so early planning pays off. Peak months fill quickly, and southern camps are small. Your operator will confirm what is included, and official park tariffs apply. Read what shapes safari cost to understand where flexibility exists without relying on any figures.
