Tanzania 4-Day Safari Itinerary: Tarangire, Manyara and Ngorongoro, or a Serengeti Fly-In

Four days is enough for a rewarding Tanzania safari, either a road trip through Tarangire, Manyara and Ngorongoro or a fly-in stay in the Serengeti with a crater visit.

The extra day over a three-day trip makes a real difference, because it removes the feeling of constant motion and allows a full morning at each park.

These plans show two main routes and tell you who each one suits.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

At a glance

  • Length: 4 days, 3 nights
  • Road plan: Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro
  • Fly plan: Serengeti and crater
  • Start: Arusha
  • Best for: Short holidays
Overview

Why Four Days Works

With four days you can spend at least one night in each of three parks, or two nights in the Serengeti and one at the crater. That spacing means you wake up inside the landscape instead of arriving at lunchtime and leaving at dawn. Animals are most active in early morning and late afternoon, so overnight stays near the parks are valuable. This is also a good length for travellers pairing safari with a conference or a coastal break. For an overview of the region see the northern circuit.

Plan

Plan One: The Classic Road Route

  • Day 1. Drive from Arusha to Tarangire, with a game drive after lunch. Overnight near the park.
  • Day 2. Early drive in Tarangire, then continue to Lake Manyara or the Karatu area. See Lake Manyara National Park.
  • Day 3. Descend into Ngorongoro Crater for a morning game drive and picnic lunch, then return to the rim or the highlands.
  • Day 4. Drive back to Arusha for onward travel.

This plan is the most efficient way to see varied habitats by road.

Plan

Plan Two: Serengeti Fly-In With the Crater

  • Day 1. Fly from Arusha to the Serengeti, with an afternoon drive.
  • Day 2. Full day in the Serengeti, exploring plains, kopjes or river areas depending on season.
  • Day 3. Morning drive, then fly or drive to the Ngorongoro area for sunset on the rim.
  • Day 4. Crater game drive and return to Arusha.

This route trades variety for an immersive Serengeti stay. See how to get to the Serengeti and how to get to Ngorongoro.

Plan

Plan Three: Slower Pace With Two Parks

  • Day 1. Drive to Tarangire and stay two nights, allowing a full day on the circuit.
  • Day 2. Full Tarangire day with a picnic lunch.
  • Day 3. Drive to Ngorongoro and enjoy a rim sunset.
  • Day 4. Crater descent, then return to Arusha.

Reducing the number of parks gives more relaxed days and better photography light. See Tarangire National Park.

Choosing

Choosing Between Routes

If you love variety, choose the road route. If the Serengeti matters most, take the fly-in plan, but remember that four days leaves little margin for weather or delayed flights. The slower plan suits families and anyone who dislikes packing every day. Ask your operator about vehicle type, roof hatches for photography and how the guide handles early starts. Our game drives explained and safari photography tips help you make the most of every drive.

Season

Season and Packing

Dry months give clearer wildlife viewing, and Tarangire is especially good from mid-year, when animals gather by the river. Crater rim mornings are cold at any time, so pack layers. In green season, expect showers and quieter roads. See best time to visit Tanzania and Tarangire best time to visit.

Extending

Extending to Five Days

Many travellers add one night and find the trip transforms. See the Tanzania five-day itinerary for the next step. Official tariffs apply, and your operator can describe exactly what the arrangements cover.
