Kilimanjaro and Safari Medium Itinerary: 11 Days Climbing Machame and Visiting the Serengeti
Eleven days is the classic compromise: a Machame route climb of six or seven days, a rest day and a three-to-four-day northern safari.
This plan assumes a climb on the Machame route, which many operators schedule over six or seven days. It is a popular scenic route, although the number of days and the camps vary by operator.
After the descent you recover and then move into the wildlife parks. The itinerary suits fit, well-prepared travellers who want the summit attempt and a Serengeti experience in one trip.

The Mountain: Machame in Outline
The Machame route climbs from forest to moorland, crosses the Shira area, passes near the Lava Tower and the Barranco wall, and then reaches Barafu before the summit night. Operators plan the exact schedule, and many use an extra day to improve acclimatisation. A summit start is usually in the early hours so that you reach Uhuru Peak near dawn. The descent is long and hard on knees, so trekking poles help. Compare other options in Kilimanjaro routes compared.
Recovery Before Safari
After you descend to Mweka Gate, return to Moshi or Arusha for a shower, a proper meal and a night of sleep. A rest day is not optional in practice, because many climbers feel exhausted afterwards, and a safari drive on day nine will be more enjoyable if you have slept. Light stretching and a gentle walk in town are plenty. See where to stay in Moshi and around Kilimanjaro.
The Safari Segment
Tarangire gives an easy first day, as described in the Tarangire guide. The Ngorongoro Crater follows, and the Serengeti is the climax if you have time. With an eleven-day plan, the Serengeti portion usually needs a flight in or out because the road is long. Ask your operator about the options and read how to get to the Serengeti.
Pacing Notes
Do not schedule an international flight on the day you descend. Keep luggage compact: a duffel for the mountain and a soft bag for light aircraft. Altitude on safari is modest, so you will probably feel strong. If you do not reach the summit, the safari still delivers a great experience, and your operator may help you adjust the plan. See the luggage rules.
Variations
Choose a longer route, such as Lemosho, if you want a more gradual ascent, and extend the programme to thirteen or fourteen days, as in the long itinerary. Those who want fewer drives can base in the Serengeti for two nights and skip Tarangire. Add a Zanzibar stay if you want the beach, which is explained in Zanzibar and Stone Town.
