Best Time for a Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari: Month-by-Month Guide

The best months for combining Kilimanjaro with a safari are the dry periods of January to early March and June to October, although the climb and the parks can be done all year.

Kilimanjaro creates its own weather, and the safari circuit follows regional rains, so the two halves react to different conditions. Still, the broad dry seasons overlap well.

Use the month-by-month notes to decide which factors matter most to you: dry trails, wildlife movements, fewer people or lush scenery.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Climbing

Climbing Seasons

The two main dry seasons offer the most stable weather, with clearer skies and better trail conditions, so they are the busiest. In the wet months, paths are slippery and cloud is more frequent, but there are fewer climbers. Summit night is cold in every month, so warm clothing is essential. Safari

Safari Seasons

Wildlife viewing is rewarding all year, but where the herds are changes. Migration timing varies from year to year, so no sighting can be promised. Calving, western corridor movements and northern river crossings occur at different times. See the Serengeti migration calendar and Tanzania best time to visit.

Best

Best Overlaps

June to October combines a dry mountain with dry safari conditions and good wildlife viewing, but it is busy, so book early. January and February offer another dry spell, with the southern plains in focus. If you want fewer people, consider the shoulder weeks at the edges of the dry seasons and accept a chance of showers.

Travelling

Travelling in the Green Season

March to May is the quietest time on the mountain and in the parks. Expect rain, mud and cloud, and plan extra buffer days. Gear should be fully waterproof. Many travellers enjoy the lush scenery and birdlife. See the Tanzania green season itinerary for ideas.

Packing

Packing and Preparation

Climbing needs layers for several temperature zones, and the Ngorongoro rim is cold too. Ensure your boots are well broken in. See the Tanzania safari clothing guide and the packing list.

Cloud

Cloud, Views and Photography

Clear mornings give the best views of the mountain from the plains, and the dry seasons are likeliest to offer them, though cloud can build at any time. Photographers should plan for dust in the dry months and soft light in the green season. On the mountain, early starts and cold nights drain batteries quickly, so keep spares warm inside your clothing. For game viewing technique, see safari photography tips, and for how to read the dates, see East Africa best time to visit.
