Kilimanjaro and Safari Long Itinerary: 15 Days Climbing Lemosho, Serengeti Safari and Zanzibar

Fifteen days lets you take a longer, more gradual route on Kilimanjaro, recover properly, enjoy a full northern safari and finish on the Zanzibar coast.

A longer trip changes the character of the combination. Instead of fitting everything in, you give the mountain the time it needs, treat recovery as part of the plan and finish with a relaxed beach stay.

The sample below uses a longer route such as Lemosho, which many operators run over about eight days, although schedules vary. Your fitness, preferences and dates shape the final plan.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Why

Why Lemosho for a Long Trip

Lemosho starts on the western side of the mountain, with forest and wilderness scenery and a more gradual profile on the early days. Extra days increase the chance of acclimatising well. The drive to the start is longer than for some other routes. If you prefer another route, see Kilimanjaro routes compared. No route guarantees a summit, but a gradual ascent is widely considered helpful.

Recovery

Recovery and the Transition

After you descend, you need a quiet day. Hot showers, laundry and a long sleep will do more for your safari mood than a rush into the parks. Use the time to repack, charge cameras and swap hiking gear for safari clothes. You may also want to store mountain equipment at your hotel. The Arusha city guide and Moshi town guide describe possible bases.

A

A Fuller Safari Circuit

With three nights after the recovery day, you can add Lake Manyara or stay longer in Tarangire and still reach the Serengeti. The plains reward time, with different areas offering different wildlife at different months, and herd movements cannot be guaranteed. See the Serengeti guide and the migration calendar to choose a month and region.

Finishing

Finishing on Zanzibar

A few beach days after a climb and a safari are a pleasure. Flights to Zanzibar are common from northern Tanzania, but check current schedules and light-aircraft luggage limits. Choose a coast to suit your taste, using Zanzibar beaches by region, and spend one day in Stone Town if you enjoy history. If you prefer not to go to the coast, add a night in the Serengeti.

Variations

Variations for Longer or Shorter Plans

Adding a Mount Meru trek before Kilimanjaro can help some travellers prepare, as explained in the Mount Meru guide, although it also adds days. Those with only thirteen days can omit Zanzibar. Those wanting to include Rwanda gorillas might look at the Rwanda and Tanzania combination instead, because climbing and trekking back to back is tiring.
