Weekend Getaways From Nairobi: Short Safari and Nature Breaks

Nairobi has a rare advantage: wild country begins within reach of the city, so a weekend can include a game drive, a lake, a mountain view or even a short flight to a conservancy.

Whether you live in Kenya or are passing through on a long trip, a short break is easy to arrange. The best options combine a modest travel time with a strong reason to go: rhinos, flamingos, elephants or a forest walk.

This guide groups getaways by length and gives enough detail to choose between them. Check current road and flight conditions with your operator before travelling.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

One-Day and Overnight Ideas

Nairobi National Park lies at the edge of the city, with lions, giraffes, rhinos and buffalo against a skyline backdrop, so a half day is enough. A visit can be combined with a sanctuary or a museum visit in the city. For an overnight, Lake Naivasha is an easy first choice, with boat rides, hippos and the cycling and walking opportunities of Hell's Gate. See Nairobi National Park itineraries and things to do in Nairobi.

Two-Night

Two-Night Rift Valley Break

A classic weekend leaves Nairobi early, descends the escarpment to Naivasha for a boat trip, then continues to Lake Nakuru for a night and a dawn drive for rhinos and birds. The return drive passes the escarpment viewpoints again. This is the most popular short break by road, and it works for families, couples and friends. See Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate and Lake Nakuru National Park.

Three-Night

Three-Night Wildlife Break

If you can stretch to three nights, choose a short flight or a longer drive to a bigger destination. Amboseli offers elephants beneath Kilimanjaro, with road access that suits a long weekend. Ol Pejeta, in Laikipia, has rhinos and a chimpanzee sanctuary within a day's reach. The Masai Mara is possible too with a morning flight and an afternoon drive. See getting to Amboseli and getting to Ol Pejeta and Laikipia.

Forest

Forest, Hills and Quiet Corners

Not every getaway needs a big animal list. Forest trails, hill viewpoints and lakeside lodges around the Rift Valley and the Aberdares and Mount Kenya foothills suit walkers and birders. Many offer picnics, spa treatments or fishing. Ask what activities are available and whether guides are included.

Choosing

Choosing Between Road and Air

Road trips are flexible and cost less, though traffic leaving Nairobi on Friday can be slow. Flights from Wilson Airport save hours to farther destinations but need baggage in soft bags and fixed times. Leave early on the outward day to make the most of the first afternoon. Seasons

Seasons and What to Pack

Highland areas are cool, especially at night, so pack a fleece even for a short stay. In the rains, bring waterproofs and expect slower tracks. See best time to visit Kenya and the packing list.

Turning

Turning a Weekend Into a Safari

If a short break whets your appetite, link two getaways into a longer trip. See the Rift Valley lakes itinerary or Kenya safari itineraries of 3, 5 and 7 days for ideas.

Planning

Planning a Smooth Weekend

Book accommodation early for public holidays and school breaks, when popular lakes fill quickly. Confirm gate opening times, because parks close in the evening and late arrivals can be stressful. Carry cash for small purchases, a charged phone and a paper copy of your booking. If you are travelling with children, break the journey with a snack stop, and pack plenty of water. A flexible plan, with one main activity per day, is more rewarding than trying to cover everything in a single weekend.
