Tanzania Safari Booking Timeline: When to Book Flights, Lodges and Permits
Start planning a Tanzania safari six to twelve months ahead for peak season, and earlier still for popular migration camps, Kilimanjaro dates and school holiday travel.
Good camps are small and fill early, especially in the months when the Serengeti migration and the dry season draw the most visitors. Booking early widens your choice and gives you time to arrange visas, vaccines and flights without stress.
The timeline below is a general guide, and we explain how lead times change by season and trip type.
This guide is part of our Uganda facts and travel information guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.
At a glance
- Peak season: Book 9 to 12 months or more ahead
- Shoulder season: Four to eight months
- Kilimanjaro: Early for popular months
- Visas and health: Start two to three months ahead
- Last-minute: Possible, with limited choice
How Far Ahead Should You Book?
| Travel period | General lead time |
|---|---|
| Peak dry season and migration months | Nine to twelve months, or more for the most sought-after camps |
| Christmas, New Year and school holidays | As early as you can, often a year ahead |
| Shoulder months | Four to eight months |
| Green season | Often flexible, though a few months is still wise |
| Last-minute travel | Possible, but choice of lodges narrows |
These are rough guidelines, not rules, and a good operator will tell you honestly how availability looks for your dates.
Twelve to Nine Months Out
Decide on the broad shape of your trip: which parks, how many nights and whether to add Zanzibar or a climb. Read Tanzania itineraries of four, seven and ten days and the best time to visit. Contact an operator to discuss options and confirm availability. If you want to be in a specific part of the Serengeti for river crossings, secure accommodation first, because camps there are small and popular. Check your passport validity for the dates you will be travelling.
Eight to Four Months Out
Confirm your itinerary and pay any deposit required. Your operator will arrange domestic flights, transfers and park bookings. Book international flights once the dates are secure, leaving a buffer on either side for delays. Consider travel insurance as soon as you pay a deposit.
If you plan to climb Kilimanjaro, begin training and check route and date availability. See Kilimanjaro climbing guide. For beach add-ons see Tanzania safari and Zanzibar combination.
Three to Two Months Out
Visit a doctor or travel clinic to discuss vaccines and malaria prevention, since some vaccines need weeks to work. Check visa requirements and apply if needed through official channels. See East Africa visa guide and Tanzania health and malaria guide. Make final payments according to your operator's terms and review the cancellation conditions.
One Month to One Week Out
Confirm all flights, transfers and lodgings. Prepare luggage using the luggage and light aircraft rules and the packing list. Arrange money, notify your bank and download documents offline. Ask your operator for a final briefing, emergency contacts and meeting arrangements on arrival. Sort out connectivity using the internet and SIM card guide.
Booking at Short Notice
Short-notice safaris are possible, particularly in the green season, but choice of camps and flights is narrower. Be flexible about dates and areas, and consider less-visited regions. Tell your operator what matters most, whether that is a particular park, a lodge style or a date, and let them suggest the best available combination.
Cancellation, Insurance and Changes
Read the terms for deposits, final payments and cancellations before you commit. Insurance should cover medical care, evacuation, cancellation and baggage. Ask how changes to dates or names are handled. For cost drivers that shape the final price see Tanzania safari budget factors.
