Tanzania Northern Circuit 10-Day Itinerary: Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti
Ten days is the comfortable length for the northern circuit, giving unhurried time in Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater and at least three nights in the Serengeti.
The northern circuit is Tanzania's classic safari loop, and it works best when you give each landscape enough time. Ten days allows early starts without exhaustion, a rest day or a gentle morning, and a proper look at more than one Serengeti region.
The plan below follows the usual west-to-north sweep from Arusha, and the sections after it explain how to stretch or shorten it, who it suits and what to ask your operator before you confirm.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.
At a glance
- Length: 10 days, 9 nights
- Start and end: Arusha, with a flight out
- Parks: Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro, Serengeti
- Pace: Moderate, with a flight in the Serengeti
- Best for: First-time Tanzania visitors
The Day-by-Day Plan
- Day 1: Arrive at Kilimanjaro or Arusha airport, transfer to a lodge in the Arusha area and rest. Meet your guide for a short briefing.
- Day 2: Drive to Tarangire National Park for a full day among elephants, baobabs and the river. Overnight in or near the park.
- Day 3: Morning game drive in Tarangire, then drive to the Lake Manyara or Karatu area. A relaxed afternoon helps you recover from the first big day.
- Day 4: Half-day in Lake Manyara National Park for forest, lake edge and birds, then continue up to the Ngorongoro highlands.
- Day 5: Early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater for a morning of game viewing, a picnic lunch on the floor, then drive towards the Serengeti.
- Day 6: Full day in the central Serengeti around Seronera, with long drives and time to follow sightings.
- Day 7: Move to the region where the herds are, such as the north or west, depending on the month.
- Day 8: Full day in the same region, with an optional sunrise balloon flight if you want a special experience.
- Day 9: Final morning drive, then a scheduled flight back to Arusha and an overnight stay close to the airport.
- Day 10: Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
Why Ten Days Works
Most travellers find that seven days feels rushed because every second day involves a long transfer. With ten days you can alternate full game-drive days with lighter ones, and you can spend three nights in the Serengeti rather than two. That matters because the park is vast, and one camp location rarely shows you everything. If you can also choose which months to travel, read best time to visit the Serengeti and the Tanzania seasons guide before fixing your dates.
Pacing and Driving Days
Transfers are part of the experience, but they should not dominate. Between Arusha and Tarangire the road is straightforward, while the Ngorongoro to Serengeti leg is longer and includes game viewing on the way. Many travellers reduce fatigue by flying one leg of the Serengeti section, which turns a long day into a short hop and adds aerial views. See how to get to the Serengeti and flying safaris for the trade-offs.
Shorter and Longer Variations
For seven days, drop Lake Manyara and spend two nights in Tarangire, one near Ngorongoro and three in the Serengeti. For twelve days, add a second Serengeti region or a night in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area beyond the crater, described in the area beyond the crater. A further extension is a few beach days, covered in Tanzania safari and Zanzibar combinations.
What Each Park Adds
Tarangire offers big elephant herds and a river that draws animals in the dry months, as described in the Tarangire guide. Lake Manyara adds forest, birds and a different pace, see the Manyara guide. The crater is the best single day for concentrated wildlife, and the Serengeti provides space, predators and the migration. Together the four give a rounded picture of northern Tanzania.
Who This Itinerary Suits
It suits couples, families with older children, friends and solo travellers on a small-group departure who want a complete first Tanzania safari. It is less suited to travellers who dislike early starts or long vehicle days. Accommodation can range from simple tented camps to comfortable lodges, and your choice affects how much time is spent driving to and from your camp. Ask about the route and see safari accommodation types.
Questions to Ask Before Booking
Ask which Serengeti region the plan will use in your travel month, whether the Serengeti flight is included, how many people share a vehicle and whether the vehicle has a roof that opens for viewing. Ask about meals, bottled water and park fees included in the price, and remember that official tariffs apply. For general planning, see the northern circuit overview and the packing list.
