Rwanda and Tanzania Long Itinerary: 15 Days of Gorillas, Chimps, Serengeti and Zanzibar
A long Rwanda and Tanzania itinerary of about fifteen days covers gorillas, chimpanzees or Akagera, the full northern circuit and a few days on Zanzibar, with room to rest between legs.
Two weeks or more lets you slow down. Instead of racing between airports, you can spend several nights in each habitat and absorb the changes of scenery.
The plan below is a sample for 15 days. Longer trips can add Tarangire nights, Ruaha or Mahale, and shorter ones can omit Zanzibar. Seasons also shape the best choices, as the best time page explains.

Rwanda With Room to Breathe
With more days, Rwanda becomes two distinct experiences. Volcanoes gives mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Then you choose between the forest of Nyungwe, with chimpanzee trekking and walkways, or Akagera, with savannah game drives and boat trips. Each is a considerable drive from Kigali, so a night on either side is more comfortable than a rushed return. Seasonal weather affects trails, which is why a buffer day matters.
The Crossing and a Rest Night
Day eight is the longest travel day. Keep it light: no early game drive, and a night in Arusha before heading into the parks. This gives you time to repack, sort laundry and confirm domestic flights. The Tanzania luggage and light aircraft rules explain weight limits, and the Arusha city guide suggests what to do if you arrive early.
A Fuller Northern Circuit
With five nights in northern Tanzania, you can include Lake Manyara or an extra Tarangire night and still give the Serengeti two nights. The crater is best done early, with a picnic lunch on the floor. Because the Serengeti is the highlight for many people, ask whether a fly-out suits your budget and schedule. For comparison, the Tanzania northern circuit 10-day itinerary shows how a Tanzania-only trip can be arranged.
Finishing on Zanzibar
Zanzibar offers a restful close, with Stone Town history and beaches along its coast. Flights from northern Tanzania to Zanzibar are common, but you should check current schedules and luggage limits. Choose a coast according to your preferences, using the Zanzibar beaches by region guide. If you would rather skip the island, add nights in the Serengeti or at Tarangire.
Variations for Longer Trips
Travellers with up to eighteen days can include Gishwati-Mukura or Lake Kivu in Rwanda, or a Kilimanjaro foothill stay in Tanzania, though climbing is a separate commitment covered in the Kilimanjaro climb and safari guide. Those who prefer fewer moves might drop Akagera and Nyungwe and simply spend more time at Volcanoes and in the Serengeti. The pillar guide discusses the logic of each stop.
Preparing for a Long Trip
Plan visas, vaccinations and travel insurance early. The practical guide lists key topics, and the route and border guide explains how to link the countries. Allow flexibility for permits and domestic flights, pack for several climates and keep spare days at both ends. Your operator can quote exact inclusions and note which official fees apply.
