Rwanda to Tanzania: Flights, Roads and the Rusumo Border Explained
Most travellers connect Rwanda and Tanzania by air from Kigali to Kilimanjaro or Arusha, while the overland journey via the Rusumo border is long and best reserved for travellers with plenty of time.
Connecting two countries is where combination trips succeed or fail. A good route means a calm travel day, not an exhausting one.
This page explains your options in general terms. Schedules, border procedures and road conditions change, so always check current details with your operator and official sources.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.
At a glance
- Best option: Flight from Kigali
- Arrival points: Kilimanjaro or Arusha area
- Land border: Rusumo, long overland journey
- Documents: Passport, Tanzania visa, health papers if required
- Check: Current schedules before booking
Flying From Kigali
Air travel is the practical choice. Services link Kigali with Tanzania either directly or through a regional hub, and the choice varies with the season and the airline. Because schedules change, ask your operator to check current flights before you build the rest of the trip. Arrive at Kigali airport in good time and allow for a transfer from your last Rwanda stop. For airport arrival see Kigali Airport to the city.
Arrival in Northern Tanzania
Flights serving the safari circuit usually land at Kilimanjaro International Airport, which lies between Moshi and Arusha, or occasionally at Arusha itself. Your operator will arrange a transfer to Arusha, to a park gate region or to a hotel near the first park. If you arrive at night, a short stay in Arusha works well. See Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha and the Arusha gateway guide.
The Overland Option via Rusumo
A land route exists between Rwanda and north-western Tanzania, crossing at Rusumo, but the distance to the northern safari circuit afterwards is large, and public transport can involve several changes. It is rarely used by safari travellers, and it makes sense mainly for people continuing to western Tanzania or those with unusual time and flexibility. Border formalities, opening times and road conditions should be checked with your operator or official sources before you consider it.
Visas, Passports and Documents
Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda have different entry arrangements, and the East Africa Tourist Visa does not cover Tanzania. You will need a Tanzanian visa, arranged in advance or on arrival according to current rules. Passports should have enough validity and blank pages. Health requirements, including yellow fever certificates in some cases, depend on your route, so see the East Africa visa guide and Tanzania visa guide.
Planning the Travel Day
Treat the connection as the main event of that day. Avoid scheduling a gorilla trek the same day, and avoid an early game drive on arrival. Pack documents in your cabin bag, keep your accommodation address ready for immigration and note your operator emergency number. If you carry cameras and batteries, review the airline rules for them. Tips for packing for light aircraft are in the luggage rules.
Domestic Links in Tanzania
Once in northern Tanzania, you may travel by road or by light aircraft. A flight into the Serengeti saves a long drive, and the same aircraft may take you onward to Arusha or Zanzibar. These flights fly in small planes with limited luggage. See Tanzania domestic flights and Arusha to the Serengeti.
Choosing the Best Route
For a trip of ten days or fewer, fly. For two weeks or more, still fly, and use the extra time for parks rather than for transit. If your plans involve the western circuit or lakeside destinations, ask for a tailored route.
