Kizimkazi Guide: Dolphins, Fishing Village and Coast of Southern Zanzibar
Kizimkazi is a fishing village at the southern end of Zanzibar, best known for boat trips to see dolphins, a historic mosque and quiet beaches away from the main tourist strips.
Dolphin watching draws most visitors, but the village rewards a slower look. There are two main settlements, a historic centre and a fishing community, plus coves and cliffs along the coast.
This guide covers the dolphin tours, the heritage, the beaches and how to visit responsibly.
This guide is part of our Uganda districts and towns guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Dolphin Tours
Local boats leave in the morning to look for dolphins in the waters off the coast. Bottlenose dolphins are the species most visitors hope to see, and humpback dolphins are also reported in the area. Sightings are common but never guaranteed, since the animals are wild and move freely. Departures are often early because dolphins are more likely to be found in the cooler part of the day and the sea is calmer, and trips last a few hours depending on conditions.
Watching Dolphins Responsibly
Poor practice has been a concern in popular dolphin areas, with too many boats chasing animals. Choose operators who keep boats at a respectful distance, limit the number of vessels around a pod, avoid cutting across the animals' path and do not allow people to jump in and swim after them. Switching off or slowing engines when dolphins are close helps too. Your choices as a customer push the industry towards better behaviour, and a calm, patient trip is often the most rewarding.
The Historic Mosque and Village
Kizimkazi has an old mosque regarded as one of the oldest Islamic buildings in East Africa, notable for its carved inscription in Kufic script. It is a heritage site, so visit with respect, dress modestly and ask permission before entering any religious building. Walking through the village shows how the community lives from fishing and farming. Beaches and Coves
The south-west coast has a quieter feel than the north and east. Small coves with sand and rock pools lie along the shore, and the water conditions depend on tides and seas. Take advice locally before swimming, as some stretches have rocks or currents. This is a place for peaceful walks, photography and sunset watching rather than organised beach clubs. It pairs naturally with the south-east villages described in the Jambiani beach guide.
Accommodation and Day Trips
Kizimkazi has a small number of guesthouses and boutique stays, and many visitors come on day trips from Stone Town or the east coast. If staying, ask about distance from the dolphin boat launch, evening dining options and transport. The Zanzibar south coast where to stay guide explains accommodation types in the region. Day trippers should plan an early start to catch the best dolphin chances.
Seasons
Dolphins are present throughout the year, but calm seas make for pleasant trips, which suits the drier months of June to October and January to February. During the long rains of roughly March to May, seas can be rougher and some operations quieter. Check the best time to visit Tanzania page for seasonal planning.
Planning a Day Around Kizimkazi
The most comfortable way to see Kizimkazi is to start early. Leave Stone Town or the east coast before sunrise, board the boat for the dolphin trip in the cool morning, then visit the mosque and village before lunch. Bring a hat, water, reef-safe sun protection and a light layer for the boat. Wear modest clothing for the mosque visit and carry small change for village purchases. If seas are rough, boats may not go out, so keep the afternoon flexible and ask your operator about an alternative plan.
Combining Kizimkazi With Other Stops
A good day can include dolphins in the morning, the mosque and village in the late morning, then Jozani Forest in the afternoon, as described in the Jozani guide. Alternatively, link a day with a visit to the reef sanctuary at Chumbe Island. See Zanzibar beaches by region for the wider picture.
