Mafia Island Beaches: Quiet Sands, Chole Bay and Marine Park Shores
Mafia Island offers uncrowded beaches, calm bays and some of Tanzania's richest reef and fishing waters, and it remains a peaceful alternative to busier Zanzibar.
Mafia lies off the coast south of Dar es Salaam and is reached by a short flight or a longer sea journey. Much of its sea is protected within a marine park, and tourism is small-scale.
This guide focuses on the beaches themselves, with the park, diving and whale shark season covered in more depth on the linked guide.

The Feel of Mafia
Compared with Zanzibar, Mafia has few visitors, little traffic and a sense of space. Beaches tend to be long, pale and uncrowded, backed by palms and mangroves, and fishing villages dot the coast. Lodges are small and tucked away. For travellers who want a remote, laid-back island holiday, this is its appeal. For those expecting beach clubs and a wide range of restaurants, it may feel too quiet. Plan expectations accordingly and accept that services are more limited.
Beaches and Tides
Mafia's beaches are influenced by tides, with shallow flats appearing at low water and clear swimming at high water. The sea can look different from one hour to the next. Local boat captains and lodge staff know the best swim windows. Carry water shoes, avoid walking on coral and take care with the sun. Some beaches are quiet enough that you may see few other people all day. Always ask about safe swimming areas, since strong currents can occur around channels.
Chole Bay and Boat Trips
Chole Bay is the main sheltered body of water, dotted with small islands and mangrove-lined shores. Boat trips by traditional dhow or motor boat visit ruins on nearby Chole Island, sandbanks, snorkelling spots and sunset viewpoints. Ask lodges which excursions fit the tide and weather. The surrounding landscape also offers birdlife; see birding in Zanzibar and Pemba for context on island species. Respect village communities and ask before taking photographs.
Snorkelling, Diving and Whale Sharks
Much of the sea around Mafia lies within a marine park, and reefs support a wide range of fish and coral. Diving and snorkelling are major draws, and whale sharks are seen in the park's waters during certain months, with the season typically running from roughly October to March. Sightings depend on conditions, and operators follow rules on distance and numbers. The Mafia Island Marine Park guide covers this in detail, and diving in East Africa offers wider context.
Accommodation Types
Expect small lodges, bandas and guesthouses rather than big resorts. Ask about distance from the airstrip, whether meals are included, how power and water are managed and which activities the lodge arranges. Because choices are limited, early booking is wise, especially in peak months. The Mafia Island where to stay guide compares areas and accommodation styles.
Getting There and Seasons
Most visitors fly from Dar es Salaam or connect from other destinations on a short flight; check current schedules with your operator. The drier months from June to October, plus January and February, are popular, while the long rains of roughly March to May bring rougher seas and some closures. See best time to visit Tanzania for more.
Practical Advice for a Remote Island
Mafia is remote, so prepare more carefully than for a mainstream beach trip. Bring any prescription medicines, insect repellent and sun protection, plus cash, because card facilities and cash machines are limited. Carry a small first-aid kit and confirm how your lodge handles medical emergencies. Pack light for small aircraft and follow the luggage guidance from your operator. Review the Tanzania health and malaria guide and the East Africa health and vaccinations guide before travelling.
Combining Mafia With Safari
Mafia pairs well with southern or coastal safaris, such as Dar es Salaam to Nyerere, and with a stopover in the city described in the Dar es Salaam guide. Travellers comparing island choices can read Pemba island beaches and Zanzibar beaches by region.
