Michamvi and The Rock Guide: Zanzibar's Eastern Peninsula
The Michamvi peninsula is a quiet finger of land on Zanzibar's east coast, known for calm beaches, sunsets over a sheltered bay and The Rock, a restaurant perched on a rock in the sea.
Michamvi has two coasts: an open east-facing shore and a sheltered bay on the west side of the peninsula. That gives it both sunrise and sunset beaches and a quieter, more spacious feel than the busiest stretches.
This guide explains the layout, the famous rock, the tides and the sort of stay it suits.

The Peninsula
Michamvi extends into the sea at the eastern edge of the island, with beaches along both sides. Its villages are small, and accommodation includes boutique hotels, lodges and guesthouses spread widely. The peninsula is quieter than Paje to the south, and getting around usually means short rides rather than walking. Because beaches face different directions, you can pick sunrise, calm-water or sunset settings. Ask your accommodation which side of the peninsula it sits on and how that affects tides and views.
The Rock
The Rock is a small restaurant built on a rock just offshore, a landmark photographed by thousands of visitors. At low tide you can wade or walk across the sand to reach it, while at high tide a boat takes you across. Because access depends on the tide, check conditions and reserve a table in advance, particularly for dinner. Carry a bag that tolerates splashes and wear footwear you do not mind getting wet. Expect seafood and a view across the sea.
Tides and Swimming
The east coast tide dominates the day here. Water can retreat a long way, revealing sand and shallow pools, and then return to give clear, deep swimming. The sheltered west-side bay can be easier for swimming at certain times. Local staff will advise on the safest places, and it is wise not to swim alone or at dusk. Take water shoes for urchins and reef edges, and never touch living coral.
Things to Do
Besides beach time, activities include sunset boat rides in the bay, snorkelling excursions, kayaking, bird-watching along the mangroves and cycling along tracks. Paje, with its kitesurfing, is nearby; see the Paje beach guide. A half-day trip reaches Jozani Forest, and the village atmosphere continues in Bwejuu. Spa and yoga options are available at some stays.
Accommodation Types
Choices include small beachfront hotels, secluded lodges, guesthouses and villas. Ask how far the property is from the beach at low tide, whether it faces the open sea or the bay, how meals work, and how remote it feels at night. Transport questions matter: ask about airport transfers, bike or scooter hire and nearby restaurants. See the Zanzibar east coast where to stay guide for comparisons.
Seasons
June to October and January to February are the drier, busier months, with dependable sun and breezes. March to May is the long rainy season, with fewer visitors and some seasonal closures, and November brings short rains. The sea and sky can be dramatic in all seasons. For broad planning see best time to visit Tanzania.
Photography and Sunsets
Michamvi is a gift to photographers. Sunrise on the open east coast brings pastel skies and fishermen heading out, while the sheltered bay offers soft evening light. Check the tide before you plan a shot of The Rock, since the scene looks very different with water around it or sand beneath it. Use a polarising filter if you have one, protect cameras from salt spray and sand, and ask before photographing local people. Arrive early for sunset to claim a good spot and allow time for the light to change.
Getting There and Combining With Safari
Michamvi is reached by road from the airport or Stone Town, usually taking a little over an hour depending on traffic. It makes a restful finale after a northern-circuit safari, such as the 9 days bush and beach safari. Compare the other coasts in Zanzibar beaches by region.
