Nungwi Beach Guide: Zanzibar's Northern Tip, Dhows and Sunsets

Nungwi sits at the northern tip of Zanzibar and mixes a working fishing village, a traditional dhow-building tradition and some of the island's most popular beaches.

The north coast is the easiest part of Zanzibar for swimming, with less dramatic tides than the east. Nungwi is its hub, with restaurants, dive centres and accommodation of all kinds.

This guide covers the beaches, the village, the activities and how Nungwi fits with neighbouring Kendwa.

This guide is part of our Uganda districts and towns guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

The Village and the Beach

Nungwi remains a working Swahili village, and fishermen launch boats from the same shores where visitors sunbathe. Beaches around the headland are broad and white, and busy beach bars and restaurants line the sand. The mood is more bustling than in quieter villages on the east coast, which suits those who like options. Away from the beach, village streets contain shops, mosques and homes, so dress modestly when walking through them and ask before taking photographs.

Dhow

Dhow Building

Nungwi is known for its tradition of building wooden dhows by hand, and boatyards on the shore show how timber hulls are shaped. Visitors can often watch the work with permission and talk to the builders. Pay fairly for any guided visits, and avoid obstructing work. This craft links back to the sailing culture explored in Swahili coast culture and history and Zanzibar Swahili culture.

Turtles

Turtles and Marine Life

A small conservation pond and aquarium near the headland has long been a visitor attraction, giving a close look at green sea turtles that are cared for and released. Think about the welfare of animals before visiting and ask how the project is managed. Snorkelling and diving trips depart for nearby reefs and for the protected waters around Mnemba, described in the Mnemba atoll guide. Choose operators that follow reef rules.

Swimming

Swimming and Tides

Because the north coast is less affected by tides than the east, swimming is possible through much of the day, though low tide still reveals sand and rock in places. Check conditions locally and beware of boat traffic near launching areas. Watch children closely and do not swim alone at dusk or after drinking alcohol. Water shoes help on rocky stretches around the headland.

Activities

Activities and Evenings

Sunset dhow cruises, snorkelling, diving courses, fishing trips, massage and cooking classes are common. Evenings range from quiet dinners to livelier beach parties. Quieter stays are available at the edges of the village, so ask your accommodation about noise levels. A short walk or ride leads to the neighbouring beach described in the Kendwa beach guide.

Accommodation

Accommodation Types

Nungwi offers backpacker hostels, guesthouses, mid-range hotels, beachfront resorts and villas. Ask about beach access, whether rooms face the sea, tide effects, power and water supply, meal plans and distance from the airport. See the Zanzibar north coast where to stay guide for a comparison of areas and styles.

Respect

Respect and Safety in a Busy Village

Nungwi mixes tourism with a conservative Muslim community, so dress modestly in the village centre and away from the beach, with shoulders and knees covered. Public displays of affection and drunkenness cause offence, and photography of people should always be with permission. On the beach, agree prices before accepting services, swim away from boat lanes and keep valuables out of sight. At night, walk in groups and use trusted transport. Following these simple habits keeps your stay easy and keeps relations with neighbours warm.

Seasons

Seasons and Getting There

June to October and January to February are the busiest and driest months, while March to May brings long rains and fewer visitors. The drive from the airport or Stone Town is typically an hour or more depending on traffic. Combine Nungwi with a safari, as in the 9 days bush and beach safari, and compare coasts in Zanzibar beaches by region. Timing advice is in best time to visit Tanzania.
