Where to Stay on Zanzibar’s South and East Coast: Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu and Michamvi
The south and south-east coast of Zanzibar suits travellers who want village life, kitesurfing, wide tidal flats and a slower pace, with Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu and Michamvi as the main bases.
Compared with the north, this side of Unguja island feels less polished and more rooted in village life. Seaweed farmers work the flats at low tide, small guesthouses line the dunes and the beaches stretch for long distances without buildings.
The right base depends on how you feel about tides, how social you want the evenings to be and whether you want to be close to the island’s forest and dolphin excursions. This guide explains the differences without recommending individual properties.
This guide is part of our where to stay in Uganda guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Understanding the Tides First
The most important thing to grasp on the south-east coast is the tide. At low tide the sea can retreat a long way, leaving sand flats, pools and seaweed beds, and at high tide the water comes close to the beach edge. Swimming, boat trips and some kite sessions are scheduled around this rhythm. Many travellers love the changing scenery and the walks across the flats, but others feel frustrated if they expected a beach with deep water at all hours. If you want constant swimming, ask whether your accommodation has a pool, or consider combining this coast with a stay in the north. See where to stay on the north coast for that alternative.
Paje: Active and Sociable
Paje is the best known base on this side of the island, particularly for kitesurfing, because the shallow lagoon and steady winds create suitable conditions in the right months. It has a good range of cafes, restaurants, shops and guesthouses, and attracts a younger and more independent crowd, though couples and families also stay. Evenings can be sociable. If you want a lively base without the scale of the north coast resorts, Paje is a natural candidate. Ask your host which months are windy, as conditions affect how pleasant the beach is for sunbathing.
Jambiani and Bwejuu: Village Atmosphere
South of Paje, Jambiani and Bwejuu are smaller and more traditional. Jambiani is a long village strung along the shore, with guesthouses and small boutique hotels between family homes, and visitors often walk through the village or join local-led activities. Bwejuu is quieter again, with a palm-lined road behind the beach. These areas suit travellers who value atmosphere and a sense of local life over a resort experience. Expect simple local restaurants, limited nightlife and a slower tempo. Check how far your lodging is from the main road and whether there is shade on the beach.
Michamvi and the Peninsula
The Michamvi peninsula, to the north of Bwejuu, has a more resort-like feel in places, with larger properties, villas and a mixture of beach settings on both sides of the narrow land. Some stretches are calmer and more private, and some offer beaches where water remains available longer. It is often chosen by couples looking for a quiet stay. Because the peninsula is spread out, ask about distances to restaurants and whether the property runs evening shuttles or has its own dining.
Kizimkazi and the Far South
At the southern end of the island, Kizimkazi is known for dolphin excursions by boat and for a small, quiet coastline. Accommodation here is limited compared with other bays, and the area suits travellers who want to be close to the water-based wildlife trips and are happy with fewer evening options. Pair it with a visit to Jozani Forest, which is within reach of the south-east coast and is a common half-day addition.
Accommodation Types and What They Suit
You will find simple beach guesthouses, family-run bungalows, boutique hotels, a few larger resorts, self-catering villas and eco-minded stays. Guesthouses suit independent travellers and tighter budgets. Boutique hotels suit couples who want character and good service. Villas and apartments suit groups or families who like a kitchen and privacy. Resorts are fewer than in the north, so check availability early in busy months. As ever, confirm what is included, as official rates and offers vary by season.
Questions to Ask and How to Plan
Ask about the tide at your travel dates, about the wind if you do not want kite traffic, about pool access, about power and air conditioning, and about the distance to restaurants and to the nearest shops. Ask whether excursions are run by the property or independent boat crews. For planning, see Zanzibar beaches by region, the Tanzania safari and Zanzibar combination and Stone Town and spice tours.
