Kenya in May: Easing Rains, Empty Parks and the Calm Before the Migration

May is Kenya's quietest month, with the long rains easing towards the end, cool and cloudy conditions, brilliant green scenery and the lowest visitor numbers of the year.

If April is the heart of the rains, May is their long, fading tail. Showers continue early in the month, then become less frequent, and by the final week many parts of the country are seeing clearer spells and cooler air.

It is a month for travellers who value solitude, landscape and good rates over guaranteed sunshine.

This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Cooler Air and Clearing Skies

May feels noticeably cooler than the hot months earlier in the year. Cloud often hangs in the mornings, evenings are fresh and highland areas can be cold at night, so pack a proper fleece or jacket. As the month progresses, the rain becomes less frequent and heavy downpours give way to sporadic showers. Because the pattern changes from week to week, early May is closer to April and late May starts to resemble June. Choosing the final week of the month can give you the best of both worlds: green landscapes and improving weather. For the broader pattern, see the long rains travel guide.

The

The Quietest Safari Month

Fewer visitors means a different kind of safari. Lodges feel intimate, guides have time to talk, and sightings of lions, cheetahs or elephants are often shared with only one or two other vehicles. This is also when many camps offer their most competitive rates and occasionally add extras such as private vehicles for the same price as shared ones. Ask what is included and whether any facilities are closed for maintenance, because some properties use May for renovations. Our lodges and camps guide explains accommodation types and what to ask.

Wildlife

Wildlife and Landscape

Grass is long after weeks of rain, so predators can be harder to spot than in the dry season, but the resident herds are healthy and young animals are common. In the Masai Mara, the plains are a vivid green and the resident elephants, giraffes and lions remain easy to enjoy. In the Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate are scenic and productive for birds. Amboseli is green and swampy, with Kilimanjaro often hidden by cloud until the clearer mornings of late May and June.

Preparing

Preparing for the Migration

Wildebeest and zebra begin moving towards the Mara from the south as the rains finish and the grass elsewhere dries out. They usually arrive in the Mara from about July, so May is too early for river crossings, but it is a good time to plan and book. Travellers who want crossings should start enquiries now, because the best camps fill early. Read the migration calendar and compare dates before you commit.

Public

Public Holiday and Practical Notes

Labour Day falls on 1 May and can bring a short local travel peak around the Rift Valley and coast. Beyond that, May is a calm month on the roads. Some coastal hotels still operate at reduced capacity, so if the beach is the priority, check conditions with your operator and consider Diani in a different month. Review practical information for Kenya before travelling.

A

A Sample Wet-Season Week

A relaxed May week could start with a night in Nairobi, include a short flight to the Mara for three nights, and continue to Lake Nakuru or Naivasha for two nights before returning. Add a rest day in the middle, because wet-season drives can be tiring. Use the green season itinerary as a template, and compare it with Kenya in April and Kenya in June.
