Best Time for a Mara and Serengeti Migration Safari: Month by Month
The best months for a combined trip are July to October for river crossings and January to March for calving, with shoulder months offering fewer visitors but more uncertainty.
The migration is a continuous movement, not an event, so the answer to when to go depends on what you want to see. Rainfall drives the herds and varies from year to year, so every statement here describes a general pattern rather than a promise.
This page supports the combination guide and works alongside the route and border guide.

| November to December | Moving south again | Short rains, fewer visitors |
January to March: Calving
Wildebeest give birth on the short-grass plains, and predators follow. This is a fine time for Tanzania, and it can be combined with the Mara's resident wildlife, though the migratory herds are not in Kenya. See the calving season itinerary. Reverse the usual route so the Serengeti comes first.
April to June: Rains and Movement
The long rains turn the plains green and make some tracks muddy. Camps are quieter and often offer better value. In May and June the herds typically stream west and north, and in some years the Grumeti River provides dramatic scenes. Combine with the Mara only if you are prepared for wetter weather. The Masai Mara best time guide covers Kenya in more detail.
July to October: Peak Season
This is the classic window. Herds arrive in the northern Serengeti and the Mara, and river crossings are possible. It is also the busiest time, so book early and pick camps away from the busiest viewpoints if you value quiet. Crossing timing varies by weeks, so allow at least three nights in each park. See Serengeti migration calendar.
November and December
The short rains begin and the herds start moving south. The Mara quietens, and the Serengeti gains green scenery and fewer visitors. December is festive in Kenya and Tanzania, so book early if you travel then. Conditions can vary, so keep your plans flexible.
Reading the Rains and the Herds
Because the herds follow rain, a wet or dry year can shift movements by weeks. Tour operators track reports from guides and conservation staff throughout the season, so ask them how the herds have been moving in the days before you travel. A late rainy season can delay arrival in the northern Serengeti, and early rains can send the herds south sooner than average. This is why flexible planning, extra nights and a willingness to switch camps beat a rigid schedule. Local guides also understand that a crossing can follow hours of waiting, so patience, snacks and warm clothes for the cool early mornings are part of the experience.
Crowds, Camps and Booking Windows
The busiest weeks are August and September, when many camps are full several months ahead, and Christmas and New Year. If you want a particular camp near the river or a specific conservancy, book as early as you can and be prepared to adjust your dates by a few days. Shoulder months such as June, early July and late October can be excellent value, with the possibility of seeing herds without large crowds. Compare options with the East Africa best time guide before you decide.
Choosing a Month
If river crossings are your priority, choose August or September. For calving and predators, choose February. For value and quiet, choose April, May or November. Read Kenya best time and Tanzania best time, then discuss options with your operator and see the FAQs.
