East Africa Family Safari Combination: 7-Day Short Itinerary for Kenya and Tanzania
This seven-day family itinerary joins Kenya and Tanzania in a compact loop, with short drives, two nights or more at each stop and an easy final day in Arusha.
A week is enough for two countries if you accept that a combination this short is about quality rather than quantity. Families fly into Nairobi, spend most of the trip in the Masai Mara and Amboseli, and cross to northern Tanzania near the end for a taste of a second country.
The plan below assumes children of about six and over. It is part of the family combinations set, and longer versions appear on the medium and long pages.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Why This Pace Works
Each wildlife stop has at least one full day, and the longest transfers fall on days four and six, when children have already enjoyed several game drives. Keeping the Mara early means the most exciting wildlife comes while energy is high. Amboseli is compact and flat, so drives are easy, and elephants close to the vehicle tend to delight younger children. See the Masai Mara guide and Amboseli guide for what each park offers.
Activities for Children
Give children a role: a checklist of animals to spot, a notebook, child-sized binoculars and a camera if they are old enough. Ask your guide to explain tracks, dung and animal behaviour, which turns waiting into discovery. Maasai community visits can be educational when arranged with consent and respect, and a lodge swimming pool is a valuable break at midday. See Kenya safari with children for more ideas.
The Border Day
The crossing at Namanga links Kenya with the Arusha region of Tanzania. Allow a relaxed day, with snacks, water and activities in the vehicle, and keep passports and visa documents together. Tanzania needs its own visa, while the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Kenya. Read the route and border guide and visa guide before you travel.
Optional Swaps
If your children dislike long drives, fly between Nairobi and the Mara in both directions and replace Amboseli with a second Mara night. If they love animals and are good travellers, extend to nine days by adding Arusha National Park activities or a night at Tarangire. Families visiting in migration season may prefer to stay three nights in the Mara.
What Is Included
A typical package includes accommodation, meals as listed, a private vehicle with driver-guide, park entry at official tariffs, the planned transfers and bottled water in the vehicle. International flights, visas, travel insurance and personal items are usually separate. Ask your operator to confirm flight baggage limits for the domestic leg, and see luggage and light aircraft rules.
Sample Day on the Mara Plains
A typical full day begins with tea or coffee before sunrise, then a morning drive when cats and elephants are active. Return to camp for a late breakfast, rest through the heat of the day, and head out again in the softer afternoon light. Children who struggle to sit for long can be given a picnic lunch in the field instead, which turns a long drive into an outing. Encourage them to help spot animals and to note what each one is doing.
Packing and Preparation
Pack neutral clothing, sun hats, a warm layer for early drives, insect repellent and any medication. Check malaria advice with a clinic and bring children's favourite snacks for long road sections. Our packing list covers the essentials for all four countries.
