Day Trips From Moshi: Waterfalls, Coffee, Hot Springs and Kilimanjaro Viewpoints

Moshi sits at the foot of Kilimanjaro, so its best day trips explore the mountain's lower slopes: waterfalls, coffee farms, forest walks and Chagga villages, plus a few crater lakes and springs in the surrounding plains.

Many visitors reach Moshi to climb Kilimanjaro or to rest after a climb, and the days before and after are a chance to see the mountain without gaining serious altitude. The fertile slopes are farmed with coffee, bananas and vegetables, and the paths between villages are pleasant to walk.

This page concentrates on excursions. For the town itself see the Moshi town guide, and for hotels the Moshi and Kilimanjaro where to stay guide.

This guide is part of our Uganda districts and towns guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Waterfall and Coffee Tours

The best-known excursion is a village walk to a waterfall on the mountain's slopes, combined with a visit to a family coffee plot where you can see beans picked, roasted and ground by hand. The walk includes some uphill sections and can be muddy after rain, so wear sturdy shoes. It suits most fit travellers and is a good rest-day activity. Our Moshi coffee and waterfall tours guide explains the options in full.

Moshi sits at a gentle altitude, so most of these outings can be enjoyed without any special fitness. Mornings tend to give the clearest views of the summit, while afternoon cloud and showers are common on the slopes, so it pays to start early and keep a waterproof layer in your bag.

Walks

Walks at the Kilimanjaro Gates

Several park gates are reachable by road from Moshi, and some offer short forest walks without committing to a climb. Park rules apply, and a registered guide is required for walks inside the national park. The forest has monkeys and birds and the lower slopes give a feel for the climb's first stage. See the Moshi to Kilimanjaro gates route and the Kilimanjaro routes compared guide for the gates and their routes.

Hot

Hot Springs and Swimming

Spring-fed pools in the plains near Moshi are popular with locals and visitors for a relaxed swim, with palm trees and clear blue water. They suit families and travellers wanting something gentle after a climb. Weekends can be busy, so a weekday visit is calmer. Ask your hotel about current access arrangements and take a towel and a change of clothes.

Chagga

Chagga Villages and Caves

The Chagga people farm the mountain slopes and have a long tradition of irrigation channels and intensive banana-and-coffee agriculture. Community-run cultural visits may include a walk through homesteads, a talk about local history and a meal. Choose a visit arranged with the community and ask how the benefits are shared. For respectful behaviour see the Tanzania etiquette and customs guide.

Lake

Lake Chala and the Plains

Lake Chala is a deep crater lake on the border with Kenya, reached by a longer drive from Moshi. Activities there may include walks along the rim and canoeing where permitted. It suits those who like quiet, scenic places and do not mind a bumpy road. It is a full-day excursion, so start early and carry water and lunch.

Mkomazi

Mkomazi and Nearby Parks

Mkomazi National Park lies to the south-east and is known for its dry-country wildlife and rhino sanctuary work. It is usually done as an overnight trip. See the Arusha to Mkomazi route for the approach. Arusha National Park is also within reach for a longer day, and the Arusha to Moshi route shows the road between the two towns.

Planning

Planning Your Day

Mornings are clearest for mountain views, because cloud often builds later. Bring sun protection, a rain jacket, water and cash for small purchases. If you are about to climb, avoid very strenuous excursions the day before. After a climb, a gentle village tour is a pleasant way to celebrate. Read the Kilimanjaro climbing guide for planning the climb itself.
