Uganda Adventure Tours

White-water rafting, mountain hiking, abseiling and quad biking: add adrenaline to your Uganda safari.

Uganda is a safari destination, but also an adventure one. The Nile's rapids at Jinja are among the best in Africa, the Rwenzori and Mount Elgon give serious hiking and Sipi Falls offers a dramatic place to abseil. Adventure activities pair well with safaris because they break the days up and add energy.

This page is part of our Uganda tours and safaris collection. For full details see adrenaline and extreme adventure and mountain hiking adventures.

Where to go

Jinja: Rafting and River Adventure

Jinja is the adventure capital of the country. Activities include white-water rafting, kayaking, quad biking, horse riding and gentler boat trips to the source of the Nile. See the 1-day Jinja tour.

Sipi Falls: Abseiling and Waterfalls

On the slopes of Mount Elgon, Sipi Falls is a series of waterfalls with walking trails and, for the brave, abseiling. Read the Sipi Falls abseiling guide.

Hiking: Rwenzori and Mount Elgon

The Rwenzori Mountains offer multi-day treks through changing vegetation zones, while Mount Elgon has gentler routes. Read more on Uganda mountain hiking adventures.

Beyond Wildlife

Good to know

Safety and Fitness

Choose licensed operators, follow briefings and make sure insurance covers adventure sports. Some activities require reasonable fitness. Tell us about medical conditions when planning. Combine adventure with wildlife in a balanced itinerary.

Putting it together

A Sample Adventure Week

A balanced adventure itinerary might begin with a rafting day at Jinja, continue east to Sipi Falls for waterfall walks and a coffee tour, then loop back toward Kampala for a flight or drive to western Uganda. Because adventure days are tiring, it helps to alternate them with lighter days: a boat trip, a village visit or simply a long lunch with a view.

Children, older travellers and anyone with health conditions can still take part in many activities; the key is to choose the level carefully. Rafting has gentler options as well as the big rapids, and hikes can be shortened at viewpoints. Ask us to suggest a level that fits everyone in your group.

Plan well

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Stacking several demanding days back to back without rest.
  • Booking unlicensed operators because they are cheaper.
  • Forgetting that some activities have age, weight or health restrictions.
  • Leaving insurance until the last minute; check adventure sports are covered.
