Horse Riding and Cycling Safaris in Uganda
See wildlife and countryside from the saddle or a bicycle for a quieter, closer safari.
Two slower ways to see Uganda are horse riding and cycling. At Lake Mburo, riders on horseback can approach zebras, impala and other plains game more quietly than a vehicle allows. Cycling tours run in villages, around Lake Bunyonyi and in other scenic areas.
Availability depends on lodge and operator, so ask early.
At a glance
- Horse riding: Lake Mburo area; see Lake Mburo
- Cycling: Villages, farmland and lakeshores
- Experience: Beginners welcome on guided rides
- Wear: Helmet, closed shoes, long trousers
Riding Among Wildlife
Horses are calm around plains game, so riders get unusually close views. Guides lead the way and choose routes. Experience level matters: tell the stable about your ability.
Cycling Routes
Gentle rides around Lake Bunyonyi and through villages combine culture and scenery. Mountain-bike trails exist near Jinja and Sipi; see adventure tours.
Sample Plan
At Lake Mburo, a morning ride of one to two hours lets you approach zebras and antelope. In Bunyonyi, a half-day cycling loop visits villages and viewpoints, often ending with lunch by the lake.
Practical Tips
Wear long trousers, closed shoes and a helmet. Tell the stable your riding level. For cycling, check the bike and brakes and carry water. Ask about weight limits for riders. See walking safaris and Bunyonyi activities.
Best Time and Conditions
Ride early to avoid heat. Dry months give firmer trails for cycling and clearer views for riders. Wet weather can cancel rides.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Wearing sandals.
- Overstating riding experience.
- Skipping helmets.
- Not drinking enough water.
Cycling Fees
UWA lists cycling at $30 for foreign non-residents, $25 for foreign residents and UGX 30,000 for East Africans. See cycling in Uganda parks.
About these rates. UWA states that tariff fees are subject to change without prior notice. FNR = foreign non-resident, FR = foreign resident, ROA = rest of Africa, EAC = citizen of an East African Community member state (paid in UGX).
