Walking Safaris in Uganda: Where to Walk With Rangers

See the bush at a walking pace, with a ranger who reads every track.

A walking safari trades the vehicle for your own feet. You notice tracks, plants, insects and birds that you would drive past, and the experience feels intimate and quiet. In Uganda, walks are led by armed park rangers or experienced guides who choose areas and routes carefully.

Walks differ by park. At Lake Mburo you can walk among zebras and antelope; at Ziwa you walk to southern white rhinos; in forest parks, nature walks and primate treks are the main activities.

At a glance

Where Walking Works Best

  • Lake Mburo: open savannah, zebras, impala and birds.
  • Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary: an easy, flat walk to rhinos.
  • Kidepo Valley: guided walks in a remote setting; ask the park about current options.
  • Forest parks: Semuliki, Bigodi and Kibale nature walks.

Safety and What to Wear

Walk in a single line, follow instructions and never run if you meet an animal. Wear neutral colours, closed boots and a hat. Carry water and sunscreen. Read the packing list and combine walks with game drives.

Plan the day

Sample Plan

A walking day at Lake Mburo could begin with coffee and a ranger briefing, a two to three hour walk through open savannah and acacia woodland, a late breakfast, a rest, then an afternoon boat trip. At Ziwa, the rhino walk usually takes an hour or two. In forest parks, treks follow ranger-led trails.

Practical Tips

Wear neutral colours, closed shoes and a hat; bring sunscreen, water and binoculars. Listen to the guide's briefing: how to stand, how to move and what to do if an animal approaches. Do not wander off or walk alone. Children's participation depends on park rules. Keep cameras ready but do not let them distract you from the guide. See Lake Mburo and Ziwa.

Timing

Best Time and Conditions

Early morning is the best time to walk, before heat builds and when animals are active. Dry months give clearer visibility; in the rainy season, grass can be tall and trails wet. Lake Mburo and Ziwa are walkable in most seasons.

Avoid these

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wearing bright colours or noisy clothing.
  • Straggling behind the group.
