Boat Cruises in Uganda: Kazinga Channel, the Nile and Lake Victoria

Uganda's waterways deliver some of its best wildlife viewing, from hippos and crocodiles to shoebills and fish eagles.

Boat cruises are a highlight of a Uganda safari. Watching wildlife from the water is calm, close and excellent for photography, and it is a welcome change from a bumpy game drive. Four cruises are most popular: the Kazinga Channel, the Nile at Murchison Falls, Lake Victoria and Lake Mburo.

At a glance

  • Kazinga Channel: Queen Elizabeth; hippos, buffalo, elephants and birds
  • Nile at Murchison: Up to the base of the falls; crocodiles and hippos
  • Lake Victoria: Sunset cruises and Ngamba Island from Entebbe
  • Lake Mburo: Hippos and water birds; see Lake Mburo boat trips

Tips for Better Cruises

Afternoon cruises tend to catch more animals at the water's edge. Bring a hat, sunscreen, a light jacket and binoculars. Life jackets are provided on licensed boats; always wear them when instructed. Choose boats with an open upper deck for photography. See also game drives.

Plan the day

Sample Plan

Plan one cruise per park. At Queen Elizabeth, choose an afternoon Kazinga cruise after a morning game drive. At Murchison Falls, the morning boat trip to the base of the falls works well before heat builds. On Lake Victoria, a sunset cruise from Entebbe is an easy first or last-evening activity. At Lake Mburo, an afternoon cruise follows a morning walk.

Good to know

Practical Tips

Wear a hat, sun cream, polarised sunglasses and a light layer. Sit on the side the guide recommends for the best light and animals. Hold your camera strap and keep belongings dry. Do not trail hands in the water; crocodiles and hippos live there. If you have a fear of small boats, tell the operator and ask about boat size. See Kazinga Channel, Murchison boat trip and Lake Mburo cruise.

Timing

Best Time and Conditions

Boat trips run year-round. Afternoons can be best for wildlife at the water's edge, and mornings are cooler and calmer. Water levels change with seasons, which can alter wildlife concentrations and access to places like the delta.

Avoid these

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting sun protection on open boats.
  • Leaning out for photos.
  • Booking a cruise on the hottest hour with no shade.
  • Not wearing the life jacket when asked.
