Tarangire vs Lake Manyara: Two Northern Circuit Parks Compared
Tarangire is a river-fed park of baobabs and large elephant herds, while Lake Manyara is a compact park of groundwater forest, lake shore and escarpment views, and the two feel very different even though they lie close together.
Both parks sit on the road between Arusha and the Ngorongoro highlands, so they are often squeezed into the same itinerary. They are not interchangeable, though, and knowing what each offers helps you decide whether to visit one or both.
Tarangire is usually the better choice for dry-season wildlife, while Manyara is a good short stop with varied scenery. See the Tarangire guide and the Lake Manyara guide for more.

Wildlife
Tarangire is known for elephants, and the Tarangire River draws animals in the dry season; see the Tarangire wildlife guide. Lake Manyara has forest monkeys, hippos and buffalo, with occasional tree-climbing lions; see the Lake Manyara wildlife guide. Sightings depend on the day.
Tarangire's herds of elephants often travel in family groups across the river bed in the dry months, and the park's ancient baobabs make dramatic foregrounds for photographs. Lake Manyara offers a different pleasure, as you drive beneath tall trees in the groundwater forest where monkeys and baboons are easy to see.
Birdlife
Both are excellent for birds. Manyara's lake attracts waterbirds and its forest holds woodland species; see Manyara birding. Tarangire's dry woodland has hornbills and others; see Tarangire birding.
Seasons
The dry season usually concentrates Tarangire's animals along the river; see Tarangire best time. Manyara works through the year; see Manyara best time. Flooding on tracks is possible in heavy rain.
Activities
Both offer game drives, and Tarangire has walks and night drives in some areas under park rules. Manyara has canopy-level experiences outside the park at times. See Tarangire activities and Manyara activities.
Walking and night activities depend on current park rules and operator permissions, so ask when you book. Canoeing, cycling and cultural visits outside the park are sometimes available near Manyara and give variety to a short stay.
Access and Itinerary
Both are reached by road from Arusha; see Arusha to Tarangire and Arusha to Manyara. A sensible plan is Tarangire first and Manyara afterwards, then onward to Ngorongoro.
A practical point is the escarpment road that runs above Lake Manyara, which gives views across the lake and the Rift Valley floor. Consider a stop for photographs, and allow time for traffic on the main road between Arusha and the Ngorongoro highlands.
Which to Choose
If you have limited time, choose Tarangire for dry-season wildlife or Manyara for a gentle, scenic stop. Wildlife enthusiasts tend to prefer Tarangire; families and short-stay travellers enjoy Manyara. Many itineraries include both; see the Tanzania northern circuit safari guide.
If you can only choose one, let the season decide: pick Tarangire in the dry months and Manyara when you want green scenery and birds, then add the other if your route allows. Check the Tarangire access guide and Manyara access guide for travel notes.
