Tanzania Safari Lodging Types Explained: Lodges, Tented Camps, Mobile Camps and More
Tanzania safari accommodation ranges from camping and simple lodges to permanent tented camps, mobile camps and luxury lodges, and the right choice depends on location, comfort, budget and atmosphere.
The type of place you stay changes the feel of a safari as much as the parks you visit. Some stays offer hotel-style comfort, while others put only canvas between you and the bush.
Here are the main types, their trade-offs and questions to ask. We describe styles, not specific properties.
This guide is part of our Uganda facts and travel information guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Safari Lodges
Lodges are permanent buildings with rooms, a main building for dining, and often a pool, bar and viewing deck. They offer reliable comfort and suit travellers who like solid walls, hot showers and a hotel feel. Many sit on escarpments with long views over the plains, while others are in forest or beside rivers. They tend to have more rooms than tented camps, so can feel busier. Ask about room numbers, how far the lodge is from game-viewing areas, and whether it is inside the park. See East Africa safari accommodation types.
Permanent Tented Camps
Permanent tented camps combine canvas walls with real beds, bathrooms and sometimes verandas. They are close to nature, with night sounds all around, and many are small and intimate. They range from simple to exceptionally luxurious.
Most camps are unfenced, so guides escort guests after dark. Ask whether bathrooms are en suite and whether heating is offered in colder areas such as the Ngorongoro rim. See where to stay in the Serengeti.
Mobile and Seasonal Camps
Mobile camps are set up in a region for a season and moved to follow the animals, usually the Great Migration. They are small, simple in structure and can be luxurious inside. They place you in the right place at the right time but may have limited facilities and fewer fixed amenities. Book early because capacity is tiny. Ask about their location in your travel month and how they handle water, waste and power. See the migration calendar.
Camping and Budget Stays
Public campsites in the parks offer the lowest-cost option, usually with basic facilities and a camping crew provided by the safari company. Special campsites offer exclusivity and a wilder feel. Budget lodges offer simple rooms with shared or basic bathrooms. Camping is a memorable choice for those who enjoy the outdoors and do not mind simplicity. Ask what equipment, meals and staff are included, and how cold nights get at altitude.

Choosing the Right Style
Couples and honeymooners often favour intimate tented camps, families may prefer lodges with pools and family rooms, photographers choose locations near key habitats and budget travellers consider camping. Think about how much time you will spend at camp, whether you value privacy or facilities and how comfortable you are with open-fronted spaces. See East Africa honeymoon safaris for romantic ideas.
Questions to Ask Before Booking
Ask about location inside or outside the park, distance to the main sightings, bathroom and power arrangements, heating and cooling, wifi, child policies, laundry, accessibility and environmental practices. Ask about the season: some camps close in the long rains. See budget factors to understand how style affects cost.
