Tanzania in July: Dry Season Safaris, Cool Mornings and the Herds Heading North

July is the start of Tanzania's high season, with dry weather, cool mornings, large herds moving through the central and northern Serengeti and a rising tide of visitors on all the main circuits.

By July the long rains are well behind, the grass is drying and animals are drawn toward permanent water. This is the classic safari image: golden grass, clear skies and long views.

This guide looks at July as the month of movement, explaining where to be in the Serengeti, how the other northern parks behave, and why the breezy coast makes a good finish.

This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Weather and Comfort

July days are sunny and mild, with cold early mornings and nights, particularly on the Ngorongoro rim and in the Serengeti. Rain is rare, dust increases through the month and the sun at altitude is strong. Warm layers matter for open vehicles at dawn, and sunscreen and sunglasses help through the day. On the coast, the south-easterly breeze brings cooler, drier conditions. See the Tanzania best time guide for context.

The

The Herds in the Serengeti

In July, large numbers of wildebeest and zebra are moving north through the central, western and northern Serengeti. Depending on the year, herds may be near the Grumeti River early in the month and reaching the northern Serengeti towards the end, where the Mara River crossings begin. Movements are unpredictable, so flexible plans are valuable. A base in the north increases your chances of seeing crossings late in the month. Read the migration calendar and Serengeti regions guide.

Tarangire

Tarangire and the Dry-Season Elephants

As the land dries, elephants, buffalo, zebra and many antelope species concentrate along the Tarangire River, so July brings some of the best elephant viewing in northern Tanzania. Baobabs, big herds and birds make the park excellent for photographers, and it is easy to combine with Manyara and Ngorongoro. See Tarangire wildlife guide and Tarangire activities.

Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro and Mountain Climbing

July is a popular time for climbing, with dry trails and good visibility, but busy routes and cold nights. Book a reputable operator with proper safety practices and fair treatment of porters. Acclimatisation days improve success, and good gear is vital. Consider shorter walks around Mount Meru or the Arusha area if you prefer less altitude. See Kilimanjaro climbing guide and Mount Meru guide.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar in July

Zanzibar is drier and breezier, with cooler nights and a clearer sky than in the wet months. It is a comfortable time to explore Stone Town, take a spice tour or relax on the beach, and the sea is usually pleasant. Tides on the east coast shape swimming time, so check schedules. See east coast guide and beaches by region.

Crowds

Crowds, Holidays and Booking

July coincides with Western school holidays, so demand for lodges, flights and guides is high. Book months ahead and expect more vehicles at popular sightings. Saba Saba on 7 July is a public holiday and trade fair in Dar es Salaam. Choose camps away from the busiest spots, and ask your guide to start early. See money and tipping guide for practical information.

A

A Ten-Day July Plan

Begin in Arusha, then Tarangire for two nights, Ngorongoro for one night, and four nights in the Serengeti, ideally split between the central and northern regions. Fly back and finish in Zanzibar. See Tanzania migration safari itinerary, Tanzania in August and Uganda in July for neighbouring comparisons.
