Rwanda Loop Route Guide: Kigali, Musanze, Lake Kivu and Nyungwe by Road

Rwanda's roads link the volcanoes, Lake Kivu and Nyungwe in a clear loop, but hills and bends mean that each leg is a proper drive.

Most travellers use a private vehicle with a driver-guide. Public transport exists but is not designed around safari schedules, and tight permit times reward private arrangements.

This page describes the loop between stops and the borders you may meet if you combine Rwanda with its neighbours. See the pillar guide for the bigger picture. We avoid giving fixed times or distances; ask your operator for current estimates.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Kigali to Musanze

The road north leaves the capital and climbs through farmland and hills towards the volcanoes. It is a comfortable morning drive, and travellers heading to a gorilla briefing normally sleep in Musanze the night before. See Kigali to Musanze and where to stay near the volcanoes.

Musanze

Musanze to Lake Kivu

From Musanze the route runs west to Rubavu on the lake. The scenery shifts from volcanic farmland to the shoreline, and the drive is short compared with other legs. See Musanze to Rubavu. From Rubavu, the road south along the lake to Karongi is winding and rewarding, so allow plenty of daylight; the Kigali to Rubavu route and Kigali to Kibuye route give alternatives.

Lake

Lake Kivu to Nyungwe

The journey from Karongi or Rusizi to Nyungwe is among the most scenic, passing tea estates and forest edges. It is also one of the longer legs, so start early and keep your day free. Read Kibuye to Nyungwe and Rusizi to Nyungwe. Boat transfers on Lake Kivu may be possible between some points, but check current schedules with your operator.

Nyungwe

Nyungwe to Huye and Kigali

Heading east from Nyungwe, the road leads to Huye, a good place for a night or a lunch stop, and then back to Kigali. See Huye to Nyungwe and Kigali to Huye. Many travellers fly out the same day, so schedule departure flights in the evening, or sleep in Kigali.

Borders

Borders and Combining With Uganda

Rwanda shares land borders with Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For gorilla combinations, travellers most often use the northern border posts between Musanze and south-western Uganda; see Kisoro to Volcanoes National Park and Kabale to Kigali. Carry your passport, any visa evidence and vehicle paperwork arranged by your operator. Check current government guidance before considering any crossing into the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and use only official posts.

Driving

Driving Etiquette and Safety

Rwandan roads are well kept, but they are shared with motorbike taxis, cyclists, pedestrians and livestock. Experienced driver-guides slow for villages and hairpin bends, so do not press them to speed up. Travel in daylight where possible, because night driving on hilly roads is tiring and less safe. Keep seat belts fastened, carry bottled water and use the stops to buy fruit or tea at roadside markets. Roads can be slippery in the rains, and low cloud can reduce visibility in the high sections near Nyungwe. If you feel travel-sick on winding roads, sit at the front and take medication before departure.

Planning

Planning Tips

Start early, keep snacks and water handy, and ask for a driver-guide who knows the permit schedules. Do not plan activities on arrival days after long drives. Roads can be slippery in the rains, so see the best-time page. For documents, read the practical guide.
