Kisumu and Lake Victoria: Kenya's Lakeside City and Western Kenya Gateway

Kisumu is the main city on the Kenyan shore of Lake Victoria, a warm, relaxed port with a sanctuary, busy markets, fishing beaches and easy links to the forests and hills of western Kenya.

Most safari itineraries skip western Kenya, which is a pity, because Kisumu offers a different face of the country: lakeside sunsets, hippos at dusk, fresh fish and a lively city rhythm without the crowds of the Mara or the coast.

This guide explains what Kisumu is, what to see around it, how to get there and how it fits a Kenyan itinerary.

This guide is part of our Uganda districts and towns guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

About Kisumu

Kisumu sits on the Winam Gulf, an arm of Lake Victoria in western Kenya, and it is one of the country's largest cities and the main commercial centre of the region. The railway from the coast reached the lake here at the start of the twentieth century, and the city grew as a port that linked Kenya with Uganda and Tanzania by steamer. Today it mixes old lakeside warehouses and markets with newer shopping streets and a waterfront being redeveloped. The local community is largely Luo, who have a strong tradition of fishing, music and storytelling.

Kisumu

Kisumu Impala Sanctuary

The small wildlife sanctuary on the lake shore is the best known attraction for visitors and is managed by the national wildlife service. It protects impala, from which it takes its name, along with other animals such as giraffe, zebra and monkeys, and hippos and birds are often seen from the shore. It is compact, so walking and short drives let you cover it in a morning, and the lakeside setting is attractive at sunset. Check the current visiting arrangements before you go.

The

The Lake, Fishing Beaches and Boat Trips

Lake Victoria is the heart of Kisumu life. Fishing beaches such as those along the gulf shore are good places to watch boats return in the evening, see nets being sorted and meet fishers and traders, and local guides can take you by boat to see hippos, birds and the lake's papyrus edges. Sunset trips are the most popular. Do not swim, because the lake carries bilharzia risk and hippos and crocodiles are present. Hire boats only through reputable operators with life jackets. See also Lake Victoria guide.

Markets

Markets, Food and Culture

Kisumu's markets are among the most colourful in western Kenya, selling fresh and dried fish, vegetables, fruit, spices, basketware and cloth. Local dishes include tilapia and Nile perch, often fried or stewed and served with ugali and greens, and small dried lake fish known as omena are a regional staple. A museum in the city covers the culture of the lake communities, and ask your hotel about live music venues. Dress modestly in markets and ask before taking photographs. For manners and tips see Kenya etiquette and customs.

Day

Day Trips and Western Kenya Links

Kisumu is the base for Kakamega Forest, Kenya's only remaining tract of Guineo-Congolian rainforest, famous for birds and monkeys; see also Kakamega birding. Other options include rock formations and cultural sites in the surrounding hills, the lake islands and the green tea and sugar country. Many visitors travel on to Uganda by road, and the route from Nairobi is described in Nairobi to Kakamega. Allow time, because western roads can be slow.

Getting

Getting There and Around

Kisumu has an airport with domestic flights from Nairobi, and the journey takes a short time compared with the long road. The road trip is possible and passes through the Rift Valley and highland tea country, but it takes a full day. In the city, taxis, tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis are common, and your hotel can arrange a driver. Read Kenya domestic flights guide for flying tips and luggage rules.

Best

Best Time and Health Notes

Kisumu is warm to hot throughout the year, with humidity from the lake. Rain falls in two main seasons and heavy afternoon downpours are common, so the drier months are easier for outdoor activities; see long rains guide and short rains guide. The lowlands carry malaria risk, so discuss prevention with a clinician and read Kenya health and malaria guide. Use repellent at dusk and drink bottled or treated water.
