Kenya 3-Day Safari Itinerary: Short Trips to the Mara, Amboseli and Nakuru
A three-day safari in Kenya works best when you choose one destination and do it well: the Masai Mara for big cats, Amboseli for elephants and mountain views, or Lake Nakuru with Lake Naivasha for a varied and easier-paced break.
Three days is short, and the biggest mistake is trying to squeeze in too many parks. Most of the time will go on driving and game viewing, so a single base, or at most two, gives the best return. The choice usually comes down to how you travel and what you most want to see.
Below you will find three complete day-by-day plans, a comparison of pacing, and advice on when a short trip makes sense and when you should add days.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.
At a glance
- Length: Three days, two nights
- Options: Mara, Amboseli, or Nakuru and Naivasha
- Start and end: Nairobi
- Best for: Short breaks and add-ons
- Tip: One main base only
Choosing Your Destination
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Masai Mara | Big cats, open plains, migration in season | Long road transfer or a flight |
| Amboseli | Elephants, Kilimanjaro views, easy routing | Dusty in dry months, smaller area |
| Nakuru and Naivasha | Birds, rhinos, relaxed pace, families | Less dramatic predator action |
Option A: Masai Mara in Three Days
This plan suits travellers who want the classic Kenyan safari and are willing to fly or accept a long road day. Details on the transfer are in the Nairobi to Masai Mara road and flight guide.
- Day 1: Leave Nairobi early, by road or scheduled flight, and reach your camp or lodge for lunch. Take an afternoon game drive across the plains, looking for lions, elephants and giraffes.
- Day 2: A full day in the reserve. Start at dawn, return for breakfast and rest, then drive again in the late afternoon. This is the day for the river, hippos and any migration activity.
- Day 3: A final sunrise drive, breakfast, and the transfer back to Nairobi. Flyers can be back by early afternoon; road travellers should expect most of the day.
Option B: Amboseli in Three Days
Amboseli is closer to Nairobi, which makes it the easiest short safari. It rewards clear mornings and is well suited to photography. See the Amboseli National Park guide.
- Day 1: Drive south from Nairobi, reaching the park in time for lunch and an afternoon drive among the swamps and plains.
- Day 2: Rise early for the best chance of an unobstructed Kilimanjaro view with elephants in the foreground. Rest at midday, then visit a viewpoint or cultural site before a late drive.
- Day 3: One more dawn drive, then return to Nairobi in the afternoon.
Option C: Nakuru and Naivasha
This route is gentle, scenic and suits families and birders. It involves less driving each day and offers both wildlife and activities. Read the Lake Nakuru National Park guide and the Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate guide.
- Day 1: Drive from Nairobi into the Rift Valley, stopping at an escarpment viewpoint, and arrive at Lake Naivasha for a boat trip on the lake.
- Day 2: Spend the morning at Hell's Gate on foot or by bicycle, then continue to Lake Nakuru for an afternoon game drive.
- Day 3: A dawn drive at Nakuru, searching for rhinos, buffalo and birds, then return to Nairobi.
Pacing Advice
Three days leave little room for error. Start each morning early, accept that long transfers consume time, and avoid layering extra stops. If you can add a fourth night, the experience improves dramatically because you replace one transit day with a full day of game viewing. Compare other lengths in Kenya 7-day safari itinerary and Kenya first-time safari itinerary.
What Is Usually Included
Short safaris generally include accommodation, meals as agreed, a driver-guide, a safari vehicle with a pop-up roof, park fees and airport or hotel transfers. Flights, drinks and activities such as balloon rides are often extras. Always ask for an itemised inclusion list, and remember that official tariffs apply.
Season and Packing
Mara drives are busiest from July to October. Amboseli is clearest in dry months, and Nakuru is pleasant year-round. Bring layers, a hat and sunglasses; see Kenya best time to visit and the East Africa packing list.
