East Africa Honeymoon Combination: 12-Day Medium Itinerary for Uganda and Kenya
Twelve days lets couples enjoy a gorilla trek and savannah safari in Uganda, then fly to Kenya for the Masai Mara and a sunrise balloon flight.
This itinerary balances the intimacy of Uganda's forests and lakes with the drama of the Mara plains. It has three distinct parts: the savannah of Queen Elizabeth, the mountain forest of Bwindi and the open grassland of Kenya.
Use it as a starting point, and adapt it with your operator. For other lengths, see the short itinerary and the long itinerary, both part of the honeymoon set.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Uganda: Savannah and Forest
Queen Elizabeth offers elephants, buffalo, hippos and, in Ishasha, lions that sometimes rest in fig trees. The Kazinga Channel boat trip is relaxed and romantic in late afternoon light. From there, the journey to Bwindi is scenic, and the forest provides a very different atmosphere. See the Queen Elizabeth guide and the Ishasha to Bwindi route.
The Gorilla Trek
Treks begin early and can last several hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved. The reward is a close, quiet encounter in dense forest. Permits are national and must be booked well in advance. See Uganda gorilla permits explained and tracking rules.
Lake Bunyonyi Rest Day
After Bwindi, a day at Lake Bunyonyi offers canoe rides and quiet time, which couples often appreciate before the long journey east. Read about where to stay at Lake Bunyonyi.
Kenya: Masai Mara and Balloon Flight
A flight from Entebbe to Nairobi and onward to the Mara gets you to the plains in a day, subject to current schedules. The sunrise balloon flight floats over grassland and ends with a bush breakfast. It is weather-dependent and must be booked in advance. See balloon safari in the Masai Mara and Masai Mara wildlife guide.
Pacing and Transfers
Days eight and nine are the longest, so travel as lightly as possible and keep the evening free. If time allows, add a night in Entebbe or Nairobi to avoid tight connections. See the route and border guide.
Romantic Touches Along the Way
The Kazinga boat trip at sunset, a quiet dinner on a lodge terrace overlooking the forest, and a bush breakfast after the balloon landing are classic honeymoon moments. Ask your operator to arrange them in advance, and tell your lodges that you are on honeymoon so that they can add small touches. Keep one afternoon free in each country to rest, read or simply sit and watch the view without a schedule.
Fitness and Comfort
The gorilla trek is the only physically demanding day, and the rest of the trip is gentle. Walk regularly in the weeks beforehand and break in your boots. Pack lightweight rain gear, gloves for gripping vegetation and a small daypack. After the trek, hot water and a massage, if the lodge offers one, are well earned. On balloon morning, wear layers, because the dawn air can be cold before the sun rises.
Optional Swaps
Swap Queen Elizabeth for Murchison Falls for a boat trip to the falls, or add a coastal finish after the Mara. Couples who prefer Rwanda can replace Bwindi with Volcanoes National Park, using the Kigali route.
