Diving in Mafia Island: Coral Reefs, Whale Sharks and Marine Park Conservation

Mafia Island, south of Zanzibar, is one of Tanzania's best-known diving destinations, with a marine park that protects coral reefs, sheltered bays and a seasonal chance of encountering whale sharks.

The island is far quieter than Zanzibar, with few visitors and a slow pace. Divers come for the reefs, the clear water and the sense of space, while others come to snorkel or simply relax.

This guide explains what the diving is like, the best months, how to plan a stay, and the rules that protect the marine park.

This guide is part of our Uganda park trails and activities guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

The Marine Park

Mafia Island Marine Park protects a large area of reef, seagrass, mangrove and sheltered bays around the island. It is managed to balance conservation with local livelihoods, and visitors pay park fees which support its work. Read the Mafia Island Marine Park guide for the wider overview. Official rules apply, and your dive operator should explain them at the start.

What

What the Diving Is Like

Divers can expect healthy hard and soft corals, reef fish, turtles, rays and occasional larger fish, with a mix of wall, slope and sheltered bay dives. Sites differ in depth and current, so operators match them to certification levels. Visibility varies with tides, season and plankton, and the best dives often come on incoming tides.

Beginners can take introductory dives or full courses, while experienced divers can ask for advanced sites. Always dive with a licensed operator.

Whale

Whale Sharks

Whale sharks are seen around Mafia Island in the warmer months, often reported from roughly October to March, when plankton blooms attract them. Trips to look for them are run with guides who follow marine park rules on distance and behaviour. Sightings are never guaranteed, and conditions determine whether a trip goes ahead. Operators should limit numbers in the water and forbid touching or chasing the animals.

Snorkelling

Snorkelling and Other Marine Activities

Non-divers can snorkel on shallow reefs, join boat trips to sandbanks and explore Chole Bay by boat or traditional dhow. The ruins on Chole Island offer a historical contrast to the marine focus. Fishing villages and mangroves provide additional exploration. See dhow sailing in Zanzibar for a comparison of coastal sailing options.

Getting

Getting There and Where to Stay

Most visitors fly from Dar es Salaam or other airstrips on small aircraft, and boats are an alternative from the mainland. Accommodation is mostly small lodges and guesthouses, with a few more upmarket options, and many are linked with dive operators. Ask about dive packages, equipment hire and transfer arrangements. See where to stay on Mafia Island, Tanzania domestic flights guide and Tanzania coastal and Saadani itinerary.

Conditions

Conditions, Seasons and Safety

The dry months generally bring calmer seas, while the long rains can reduce visibility and disrupt boat schedules. Divers should hold a recognised certification, follow dive plans and check insurance that covers diving. Respect marine life by not touching coral, and use reef-safe sun protection. See scuba diving in East Africa and best time to visit Tanzania for timing.

Combining

Combining Mafia With Safari

Mafia pairs well with the southern safari circuit, since Nyerere is a short flight away, or with a northern safari followed by a beach rest. Plan at least three nights on the island to allow for weather and dive days. See Nyerere itineraries and Tanzania safari and Zanzibar combination for ideas.
