Jinja and Murchison Falls Short Itinerary: Six Days on the Nile

This six-day plan gives a taste of both stops: a full day of river activity at Jinja followed by two nights at Murchison Falls for game drives, a boat to the falls and a hike beside the water.

Short itineraries work only if the pacing is honest. There is one long driving day between Jinja and Murchison Falls and one on the way back, and the plan below accepts that rather than hiding it. In return you see the Nile at its source and at its most dramatic in less than a week.

It is a good fit for travellers with limited leave, for a first Uganda trip, or as the first leg of a longer holiday described in the combination guide.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Why

Why This Order Works

Doing Jinja first means you are fresh for the physical activities and the driving is spread across the trip. If you reverse the order you finish with a long journey immediately before rafting, which is tiring and leaves little margin for delays. Starting in the south also lets you visit Jinja when the sun is high and the river bright, then take the cooler, quieter days at the park. See Kampala to Jinja route for the first leg.

Day

Day Three: The Long Drive

The drive from Jinja to Murchison Falls is the longest of the trip, passing through towns, farmland and forest edges. It becomes more enjoyable with stops: a lunch break, a walk to look for rhinos at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and a stretch of the legs before entering the park. For road conditions and alternatives see Jinja to Murchison Falls route.

Days

Days Four and Five: Murchison Falls

Game drives in the north of the park are usually best early, when cats and elephants are active, with the launch trip fitting neatly into the middle of the day. The hike to the top of the falls gives a closer look at the narrow gap the river forces itself through, as described in the hike and boat guide. If you want to focus on birds, choose the delta boat trip instead.

Swaps

Swaps and Options

If you prefer fewer activities, replace rafting with a scenic boat cruise and visit cafes and craft shops instead. If you have a seventh day, add a rest morning at Jinja or a second night at the park. If you want to see chimpanzees, ask about tracking in Budongo Forest, subject to availability. Longer plans are in the medium itinerary.

What

What Is Included and What to Prepare

A typical package includes a private safari vehicle and driver guide, accommodation, meals as stated, park entry and the activities listed, with official tariffs applying. International flights, visas, insurance, tips and personal items are usually extra. Pack as described in the practical guide and review the best time page before choosing dates.

Pacing

Pacing Advice

Do not schedule the falls hike for the same day as a long transfer. Carry water and sun protection, tell your guide about any health issues and keep a light bag handy for river days. Leave generous time on departure day, since road traffic around Kampala and Entebbe can be unpredictable. Return to the pillar guide if you wish to extend the plan.
