The journey from Jinja to Murchison Falls links two famous stretches of the Nile and is usually a long day on the road through Kampala and Masindi.

Jinja is known for adventure on the Nile near its source, while Murchison Falls offers wildlife and the great cascade farther downstream. Travellers often combine the two to follow the river from rapids to waterfall.

This guide explains how to plan the transfer and what to see on the way.

Overview

The Route in Outline

From Jinja the road leads west to Kampala, where you join the northern roads towards Luwero and Masindi. Beyond Masindi, the road continues to the park. Because the first part passes through busy areas around the capital, the journey is long, and an early start is vital.

The route is mostly sealed, but traffic can slow progress near cities. See Kampala to Jinja route for the first stretch and Kampala to Murchison Falls via Masindi for the main journey north.

Breaking

Breaking the Journey

Some travellers prefer to split the trip with a night in Kampala, which also gives time to see the city. This is a good option if you want to avoid a very long day, or if you are travelling with children or older relatives.

Alternatively, stop for lunch in Masindi, where there are restaurants and shops. Ask your operator for suggestions that fit your schedule, and read Kampala capital city guide if you plan an overnight.

Following

Following the Nile

A nice way to frame the trip is as a journey along the river. At Jinja you can see the area where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria, and at Murchison you see the river thunder through a gorge. In between it passes through lakes and swamps and shapes much of Uganda.

See Jinja and the source of the Nile for the starting point and Murchison falls hike and boat trip for the destination.

Combining

Combining Adventure and Wildlife

Many visitors spend a day or two in Jinja trying rafting, kayaking, quad biking or a calm boat ride, then head to Murchison for game drives and a boat trip. This variety makes for a lively itinerary that mixes adrenaline and relaxation.

If you want an activity day before you leave, read white water rafting in Jinja and Bujagali Falls for ideas. Allow a rest morning before the long drive.

Alternative

Alternative Plans

If time is short, consider a flight from Entebbe to Murchison after returning to the airport, though this adds extra steps. Another approach is to do the Jinja stay at the end of the trip, after the safari, so that the long drive to the park comes first.

Choose the order that suits your energy level, and check with your operator about the best sequence. The Uganda road routes and driving guide offers general advice on long drives.

Season

Season and Road Notes

The dry months, roughly December to February and June to August, are the most comfortable for long drives, though traffic can be heavy at any time. In the rains, some stretches near the park can be slow.

Check the Murchison Falls in the dry season guide for what the park is like at that time.

Practical

Practical Tips

Carry water, snacks and sun protection, and keep your passport and documents handy. Use the comfort stops wisely, and pack light for the journey. Ask your driver-guide about the plan for lunch, fuel and rest breaks.

If you are staying in Jinja before the trip, see hotels in Jinja for the types of accommodation available.
