Book a Safari in Uganda: How to Choose, Plan and Book Your Uganda Safari

Booking a Uganda safari takes four decisions: what you want to see, how long you have, how you like to stay, and which permits you need to reserve first.

Uganda is a compact country with a wide choice of experiences, so most travellers start by deciding which highlights matter most. Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga, chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, game drives and boat cruises in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls, and remote savannah in Kidepo can all fit in one trip. A good operator shapes the route around your priorities and the permits that are available.

The most important step is timing. Gorilla permits are limited each day and are the first thing to secure, ideally three to six months ahead for peak months. Everything else, lodges, vehicle and flights, is arranged around the permit dates. This guide explains how to book a safari in Uganda from first enquiry to departure, and links to the pages that give the details at each step.

Plan

Step 2: Pick the Length and Lodge Level

Uganda safaris usually run three to fourteen days. A three-day trip suits a single highlight such as gorillas from Kampala, five to eight days link two or three parks, and ten days or more allow chimpanzees, big game and the Nile with rest days between drives. Distances matter: Kampala to Bwindi is a full day by road, so flying between parks is worth considering for shorter trips.

Lodging ranges from simple camps and guesthouses to mid-range lodges and luxury properties with views of the forest or savannah. Decide your comfort level early, since the best lodges near Bwindi fill when permits are released. See where to stay in Uganda, luxury lodges and budget stays.

Permits

Step 3: Secure Permits First

Gorilla and chimpanzee tracking permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and are limited each day. Your operator reserves them for your dates, usually three to six months ahead for peak seasons, and later for quieter months. Rates and rules change, and recent notices cover low-season rates and the end of the payment-free reservation window. See the park fees and tariff, permit price changes and low season permits.
