Mabamba Swamp Birding: Shoebill Canoe Trips Near Entebbe
A papyrus wetland on Lake Victoria, a short drive from Entebbe airport, and the most reliable place in Uganda to look for shoebills.
Mabamba Swamp is a Ramsar-listed wetland on the northern shore of Lake Victoria. Narrow channels wind through papyrus and water lilies, and the swamp is home to one of the most sought-after birds in Africa, the shoebill, along with herons, kingfishers, jacanas and many more.
Its closeness to Entebbe makes it ideal for the first or last morning of a trip. See shoebill tracking in Uganda for the full picture.
At a glance
- Location: North-west of Entebbe on Lake Victoria
- Activity: Motorised canoe, then quiet paddling
- Best time: Early morning
- Also see: Water birds such as lily trotter and malachite kingfisher
The Canoe Trip
You are taken to the swamp edge, then board a canoe led by a local guide. The boat moves slowly through channels while the guide scans for the shoebill, which often stands almost still. Photography from a canoe needs steady hands and a lens with good reach. Sun protection is important because there is little shade.
Beyond the Shoebill
Even without a shoebill, the swamp is rich in wetland birds and a pleasant introduction to Uganda's birdlife. See the bird checklist and plan with Entebbe in mind.
Sample Plan
Leave Entebbe before sunrise, reach the landing site as it gets light, take the motorised canoe to the paddling area, search for the shoebill, and return by late morning. Keep the afternoon free for a flight or a gentle city tour.
Practical Tips
Wear a hat, bring water and cover for your camera. Canoe seats are low and basic; a cushion may help. Expect to see lily trotters, kingfishers, herons and storks even without the shoebill. Pay the guide and boatman fairly: their livelihood depends on tourism. See shoebill tracking and Entebbe.
Best Time and Conditions
Trips run year-round, with early morning best. Migrant birds add variety from roughly November to April. Weather and water levels influence canoe routes, so listen to the guide on the day.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Leaving too late and missing the best light.
- Wearing bright clothing that spooks birds.
- Not applying sun protection.
- Expecting a sure shoebill.
