Uganda Currency: The Ugandan Shilling (UGX), Notes, Coins and Exchange

Uganda's currency is the Ugandan shilling (UGX), and understanding it takes the stress out of paying on safari.

The currency of Uganda is the Ugandan shilling, abbreviated UGX (also written USh). Notes in common use go up to 50,000 shillings, with coins for small denominations. Prices for safaris, permits and hotels are often quoted in US dollars, but day-to-day purchases are in shillings.

There is no single East African currency today: Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda each use their own shilling. The East African shilling was a shared currency in the colonial era and after independence until the late 1970s. For practical payment advice see money, tipping and payments.

Basics

Notes, Coins and Everyday Prices

You will handle notes of several sizes and a few coins. Keep small notes for snacks, roadside stalls and tips. Keep your notes clean and undamaged because worn or marked notes can be refused by some businesses.

Exchange

Exchanging Money and Using ATMs

Banks and licensed forex bureaux in Kampala and Entebbe change major currencies, and ATMs are common in towns but scarce near parks. Withdraw what you need before heading to remote areas. Dollars printed in recent years are generally preferred if you carry cash.

Paying

Dollars, Cards and Mobile Money

Lodges and operators often accept cards and dollars for larger payments. Mobile money is widely used by locals. Our park fee tables list both US dollar and shilling rates, because East African citizens pay in shillings.
