Bamburi and Nyali Beaches: Mombasa North Coast Guide
Bamburi and Nyali are the beach districts immediately north of Mombasa island, offering long sandy shores, reef-protected water, resort hotels and easy access to the city, its old town and several nature attractions.
Because they sit so close to Mombasa, these two beaches are the most convenient stretch of the Kenyan coast for travellers arriving by air or rail. A short drive separates a runway or station from the sand, which suits short stays and tight itineraries.
The character differs from the quieter beaches further south or north: the north coast is more developed, with a wider choice of hotels, restaurants and activities, and it rewards travellers who like having plenty within reach.

Why Choose the North Coast
Travellers often overlook the north coast of Mombasa in favour of Diani or Lamu, but its strengths are practical ones. Flights and trains arrive close by, hotel choice is wide, and restaurants range from simple beach grills to polished dining rooms. That makes it a dependable choice for a first coastal stay, for groups with different tastes, and for anyone who wants a gentle landing after a long flight or a tiring safari. The trade-off is that the beach is more developed and busier at weekends and holidays. If you want empty sand, plan a day trip to quieter beaches such as Kilifi instead.
Where Bamburi and Nyali Sit
Both beaches lie along the coast road running north from Mombasa island, reached across the Nyali Bridge or by the northern approach roads. Nyali lies closest to the city and has a more residential, established feel, with a mix of homes, restaurants and larger resort properties. Bamburi stretches further north and has a longer run of continuous sand, with resorts set back from the beach behind gardens. The two blend into one another, so the distinction matters less than the particular stretch of shore your accommodation fronts. Read the Mombasa and Kenyan coast guide for the wider geography.
The Beaches and the Sea
A fringing coral reef lies offshore, and at low tide the water drops back and the beach becomes broad, with rock pools and exposed reef edges. At high tide swimming is much easier, so ask your hotel for the tide times each morning and plan swims around them. Walkers should wear water shoes on reef sections, and sea urchins and sharp coral are the usual hazards. The reef also calms the surf, which means the water inside is gentle for children and casual swimmers when the tide is in. Beach vendors work these shores, and a polite, firm answer is usually enough if you are not interested.
Things to See and Do
Nature and heritage sit within a short drive. Bamburi Nature Trail, often called Haller Park, is a rehabilitated quarry turned wildlife park where giraffes, hippos, tortoises and antelope live among restored woodland, and it makes a good family morning. Nearby, Jumba la Mtwana preserves coastal Swahili ruins amid trees on the shore. Mombasa Marine National Park offers snorkelling and glass-bottom boat trips, while Fort Jesus and the Old Town, covered in Swahili coast culture and history, fill a day of walking and history.
Where to Stay
Accommodation ranges from large all-inclusive resorts with pools and children clubs to smaller hotels, apartment complexes and guesthouses. Larger properties suit families who want activities on site, while smaller places give a quieter, more local experience. Ask whether the hotel sits directly on the beach or across a road, what the beach is like at low tide and whether meals are included. For a wider comparison of this area, see Mombasa and the north coast where to stay.
Who These Beaches Suit
Families, groups and first-time visitors tend to enjoy this coast because it is easy: transfers are short, facilities are plentiful and there is something to do on a rainy afternoon. Travellers seeking solitude, dramatic scenery or a boutique feel will probably prefer Diani, Watamu or Lamu, covered in the Watamu beach guide and the Lamu island guide. Honeymooners can still enjoy it by choosing a smaller beachfront hotel and booking a dhow or snorkelling outing.
When to Go
The dry months, roughly January to February and June to October, give the most reliable beach weather, while the long rains from about April to May bring heavy showers and humid air. November has shorter showers. The coast is warm and humid all year, so lightweight clothing and sun protection matter in every month. Read the Kenya beach best time guide for a month-by-month view.
Combining the Coast With Safari
Many travellers pair these beaches with a safari by road, rail or air from Nairobi, then finish with a few days of rest. Tsavo East lies within reach of Mombasa, as described in Mombasa to Tsavo East, and sample beach-and-bush itineraries appear in the Kenya safari, Diani and Lamu combination guide.
