Uganda Climate and Weather: Seasons, Temperatures and What to Expect
Uganda has a mild tropical climate with two rainy seasons and two drier periods, not four seasons.
Uganda's position on the equator and its altitude produce a pleasant climate: warm days, cooler nights, and rain falling mainly in two seasons. The long rains run roughly from March to May, and the shorter rains from September to November, while December to February and June to August are the drier periods.
Conditions vary by region. The south-west highlands around Bwindi are cooler and wetter, the north-east around Kidepo is hotter and drier, and Kampala sits in between. For month-by-month planning see the best time to visit Uganda.

Seasons Explained
Uganda has no winter or summer in the temperate sense, so we speak of wet and dry seasons. Rain often arrives in afternoon storms rather than all-day downpours. Dry periods are easier for forest trails and game viewing, while wet periods bring green landscapes and fewer visitors.
Weather in January
January falls in the main dry period, with sunny days, warm temperatures and clear skies for wildlife viewing. It is popular for gorilla trekking, so book permits early; see when to book.
Packing for the Weather
Layers and a waterproof jacket are essential in forests and mountains. See the packing list, and for low season permit rates see low season permits.
