Does It Snow in Uganda? Snow and Glaciers on the Rwenzori Mountains
Uganda is tropical and mostly snow-free, with one famous exception: the high Rwenzori Mountains.
Most of Uganda is warm year-round and never sees snow. The exception is the Rwenzori Mountains, whose highest peaks rise above 5,000 metres and have carried permanent ice and snow, though glaciers there have shrunk markedly in recent decades.
Climbers on the Rwenzori Central Circuit may meet sleet, cold rain and freezing nights near the high camps. See Rwenzori Mountains National Park, the Central Circuit and mountains of Uganda.

At a glance
- Where snow occurs: High Rwenzori peaks
- Highest peak: Margherita, 5,109 m
- Lowland weather: Warm all year
- Trail conditions: Cold, wet, muddy
Why There Is Ice on the Equator
Temperature falls with altitude, so the highest peaks are cold enough for frost and ice even at the equator. Moisture from the Congo basin helps create persistent cloud and precipitation on the range.
Preparing for Cold in the Mountains
- Waterproof outer layers and warm base layers.
- Sturdy boots, gaiters and gloves for high camps.
