The adventure tourism capital, Jinja

Jinja town is one of Uganda’s most industrialised and tourist destination site with major tourist activities and attractions. Jinja is located in the eastern part of Uganda and a rich in tourist activities majorly the source of the Nile.

Jinja town is located about 70km from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda and can be reached using the Kampala – Jinja High way. Internationally, Jinja town is known for its source of the mighty river Nile and derived its name from the huge rocks that were found in the area along the river Nile most of which were covered in water after the construction of the Owen fall dam in 1956.

Jinja is partly dominated by the tribal Basoga Group of people and other small tribes of Buganda.

Cruising to the source of the Nile

Uganda is so blessed with Jinja where the River Nile starts its journey to North Africa. The source of the Nile was first discovered by John Speke Huntington on his first journey to Uganda. At the source, visitors stand on a group of rocks to spot the watermark from a distance while others can opt to cruise to the actual source depending on the volume of the waters, here victors can take photos for their intimate travel memories and also visit one of the many craft shops to buy souvenir.

Bungee Jumping

One of the most thrilling activities on the Nile is bungee jumping. This is even more of nerve racking than just boat cruise where you will taste and resolve to the full. This activity is done on a cliff tower that was built along the shores of the Nile at a height of about 44 meters high where people undertaking the activity can safely jump towards the waters with a tied rope their legs and other protective gears. This is usually frightening to visitors but they tend to love this experience as it shows their braveness.

Bujagali falls

Located on the northern side of the Nile where it derives its name from the spiritual leaders of the Bachwezi who lived near the falls. These provide a great spot for adventure tourism with a number of tourist activities such as white water rafting , kayaking jet boating, quad biking, horse riding, canoeing, tubing and many other that take place around the falls.

White water Rafting

One of the most popular adventurous activities done by a traveller on a Uganda safari, the white water rafting experience is ranked the highest quality in Africa because of several grade 4 and 5 rapids. This experience is usually done at the kalagala and Itanda Falls.

Participants go through the breathe taking scenery and landscape along the margins of the water. Always, there is a rescue team in case of any arising issue during the rafting experience and a group of experienced Photographers to take photos of every participants of the activity.

Visiting the Monument Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most famous leaders in living memory around the globe. Gandhi is remembered for his simplicity working and working tirelessly to liberate India and lead the journey to its modernisation. This Gentle man wished to have ashes on his death and poured in the greatest river in the world which was full filled after his death. The statue of Mahatma Gandhi was constructed close to the river banks of the source to mark his death and legacy.

Visiting the Mabira Forest

Mabira forest is the largest remaining tropical rain forests in Uganda. Most of the parts of the Mabira forest have been cut down because of sugar cane growing and other human activities and urbanisation of the region. Although the most of the forests have been cut down, its small size allows it for great adventures and exciting activities most of which are bird watching and nature walks to nature lovers on their Uganda safari. Mabira is located in Buikwe District between Mukono and Jinja.

Quad Biking

This involves a four wheeled Motorist bike to some of the nearest remote areas of the town, this takes you to the sugar cane plantations, rural villages and forests along the rarely section of the Nile river. This is a very adventurous experience and can be taken by anyone irrespective of whether they have experience with bikes or not. Quad Biking experience is usually done in Kyabirwa Village which is about 80 km from Jinja town.

How to get there and away?

Jinja town is located about 70km from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda and can be reached using the Kampala – Jinja High way. Jinja town can be accessed in various ways according to the Budget of the Traveller. One can opt to Use Road Transport which takes about 2 hours driving to the city from Kampala. Alternatively, a luxury traveller can board a flight from Entebbe Airstrip / airport and Fly to Jinja Airstrip for about 45 to 1hr.
