Birding on Mount Elgon: Sipi, Forest Trails and Moorland Birds

Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda offers cool forest trails, waterfalls and high moorland, giving birders a different set of species from those of the western parks.

The extinct volcano straddles the border with Kenya, and Mount Elgon National Park protects its forest and upper slopes. Sipi Falls on the northern side provides a gentler base with trails through farmland and forest edge.

This guide explains the habitats and birds, how to bird the slopes and how to combine Elgon with the rest of Uganda.

This guide is part of our animals of Uganda and East Africa guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

A Quieter Birding Mountain

Mount Elgon is less visited than Uganda's gorilla and savannah parks, so trails are peaceful. The mountain's altitude range creates zones of vegetation, each with its own birds, from farmland weavers and bishops to forest canopy species and open moorland. Few tourists carry binoculars here, which means local guides appreciate interested birders. For overall planning, see Mount Elgon and Sipi Falls.

Birds

Birds of the Forest and Slopes

Forest birds include turacos, barbets, robin-chats, flycatchers and sunbirds, and bamboo and heath zones add specialists. Birders ask about Jackson's francolin, which is associated with Elgon's highlands, and sunbirds such as the Tacazze that feed on flowering plants. Species lists vary with altitude and season, so ask guides what has been seen recently. Higher up, moorland has open skies where eagles and vultures may soar, and rare sightings of large raptors are possible but never guaranteed.

The mountain's farmland edges also provide steady birdlife that is easy to watch from a path: weavers, mannikins, firefinches, swifts and a good number of sunbirds visit flowering shrubs. A relaxed morning around a lodge garden often produces a surprisingly long list before you set off on a longer walk. Pair the birds with views over the plains below.

Sipi

Sipi Falls and Lower Trails

Around Sipi, footpaths pass farms, coffee plots and forest remnants, making relaxed birding possible without a long climb. Read the Sipi trail on Mount Elgon and Sipi Falls coffee and waterfall hikes. Early morning is best, and the cliffs near the waterfalls attract swifts and swallows. Local guides can introduce you to farmers and coffee growers on the same walk, giving cultural context.

Park

Park Trails and Summit Routes

Inside the national park, the Bushiyi trail excursion offers a shorter walk, while the Wagagai summit trek is a multi-day climb for fit hikers. Birding on longer treks is incidental, because the group moves steadily and weather can close in. For a dedicated birding day, choose a lower trail and ask the ranger to pause at likely spots.

When

When to Go

The drier months make slopes easier and visibility clearer, as explained in Mount Elgon in the dry season, while wet periods bring mist and slippery paths but good breeding activity. Migrants from the north add variety from roughly November to April. Mornings are chilly at altitude, so carry layers and rain protection.

Planning

Planning and Access

Elgon is reached via Mbale; read Kampala to Mount Elgon and Sipi for route ideas. Compare accommodation in where to stay on Mount Elgon. A day or two of birding adds to a trip that also includes rock climbing or mountain biking if you wish.

Elgon's towns and trailheads are friendly and used to adventurous visitors. When arranging a birding visit, tell the guide in advance so that you do not feel rushed by walkers who want to reach a waterfall or viewpoint. Some local guides are keen birders and can show you favourite perches, so ask who in the area knows birds best.

Combining

Combining With Other Birding Areas

Eastern Uganda connects well with the Nile near Jinja and with Kidepo in the north-east; see Kidepo birding. Western forest birds are covered in Semuliki birding and Rwenzori birding, and the Uganda birding calendar helps with timing.
