Where to Stay at Lake Mburo National Park: Inside the Park, Park Edges and Mbarara
Lake Mburo is Uganda’s most accessible savannah park, with a mix of lodges and camps inside the park, along its edges and in Mbarara, which suits one-night stops on the way west.
Lake Mburo sits between Kampala and western Uganda, so it often serves as a first or last stop on a longer route. Its compact size means that where you stay affects what you can do, particularly if you want walks, horse riding or night drives.
This guide explains the main stay options by location and type, without naming individual properties or prices, so you can discuss them with your operator.
This guide is part of our where to stay in Uganda guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

How the Area Is Laid Out
The park is relatively small, with a lake system, rolling savannah and patches of acacia and forest. Park gates lie on its edges, and visitors usually enter via one of them depending on the route from Kampala or Mbarara. Accommodation falls into three groups: places inside the park boundary, lodges and camps just outside the gates and hotels in the regional town of Mbarara, which is a longer drive away. Check the Kampala to Lake Mburo route and the park guide for current access notes, and see the Lake Mburo National Park guide for wildlife.
Staying Inside the Park
Properties inside the park put you among zebras, impalas, warthogs and other grazers at dawn and dusk, which is the strongest argument for staying here. Choices include lodges with a view over the lake or plains and simple tented camps. This option suits wildlife-minded travellers, photographers and families who want to start a game drive without an early transfer. Ask about fencing and wildlife safety around the grounds, and about how you will move around after dark, since animals can be near paths.
Staying Along the Park Edge
Lodges and camps just beyond the park boundary offer more variety in price and style, and often more space, gardens and views. Some arrange walking, cultural visits or horseback outings on private land. They suit travellers who want a quieter atmosphere or who prefer to be outside the park for specific activities. The cost is a short drive to park gates before game drives. Ask how long it takes to reach the gate at sunrise and whether park entry for the day is arranged for you.
Mbarara and Town Stays
Mbarara has hotels and guesthouses with restaurants and services, and it can be a practical stop for travellers moving between Kampala and Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth. It makes sense when you need a comfortable bed and a meal, rather than a wildlife setting. The drawback is that you lose the early-morning and late-evening wildlife time. Read hotels in Mbarara and the Igongo Cultural Centre if you want to combine a night in town with cultural interest.
Activities That Shape the Choice
Lake Mburo allows several activities that suit different bases, including boat trips on the lake, guided walks, night drives where available and horse riding and cycling. Boat trips and walks are best planned near the park centre, while horse riding is often arranged by properties outside the park boundary. Ask whether the activities you want are offered by your accommodation or by a separate operator, and whether they need advance booking.
Seasons and Practical Notes
The park is usable year-round, with the dry months making game viewing easier and the rainy months bringing green savannah and migrant birds. See Lake Mburo in the dry season and Lake Mburo in the rainy season. Many travellers stay one night on the way to or from Bwindi, which is a sensible length. Two nights suit those who want a full set of activities.
What to Ask Before You Book
Ask about the distance to the gate, what is included in the rate, how meals and drinks work, whether there is a swimming pool and how power is supplied. Ask about mosquito protection and about security. If you are arriving late after a long drive, ask whether dinner is available. Confirm whether park entry, activities and transfers are in the package or extra, and check official tariffs.
