Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga & Nkuringo
Bwindi has four trekking sectors, each with its own gorilla families, scenery and access. Here is how to choose.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is organised by sector. Each sector has its own park headquarters, set of habituated gorilla families, lodges and road access, and the sector you trek in shapes your journey, your accommodation and sometimes the difficulty of the trek.
This page compares the four sectors so you can make an informed choice. For the overall picture of the park, see Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and for the trek itself see gorilla safari packages.
The Four Sectors Compared
| Sector | Location | Known for | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buhoma | North | The original trekking sector, with easy access and the Batwa experience | First-time trekkers, those coming from Queen Elizabeth |
| Ruhija | East | High-altitude forest and good birding | Birders, travellers passing through from Kabale |
| Rushaga | South | Several habituated families and the habituation experience | Choice of families and dates, habituation |
| Nkuringo | South-west | Steep terrain with dramatic views | Fit trekkers, scenery lovers |
Which families are habituated and available can change over time; we confirm the current picture when we reserve your permit.
How Sectors Affect Your Journey
Because Bwindi is large and the roads around it are slow, the sector decides which lodges you can use and how long the drive is on the morning of the trek. Buhoma is usually the natural choice on a route coming from Queen Elizabeth; Rushaga and Nkuringo are closer to Kisoro and Mgahinga; Ruhija sits between Kabale and Buhoma. See driving distances.
How to Choose a Sector
- Start with your route: choose the sector nearest the previous and next stops.
- Think about fitness: Nkuringo is steeper, while some Buhoma and Rushaga treks may be gentler.
- Decide whether you want a choice of families (Rushaga) or the longest-established sector (Buhoma).
- Consider the extras: birding at Ruhija, the Batwa experience near Buhoma.
We will recommend a sector when you send us your dates. You do not need to decide in advance.
Permits and Sectors
Your gorilla permit is issued for a specific sector, family and date, so the sector is chosen when you book. See gorilla permits explained.
Which Sector Suits You?
| Sector | Best for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Buhoma | Classic first trek, birding, community walks | The northern entry point, with a well-established base and waterfall trails. |
| Ruhija | Birdwatchers and quiet scenery | High-altitude forest with fewer visitors and good bird variety. |
| Rushaga | Variety of gorilla families and habituation | In the south; popular for habituation experiences. |
| Nkuringo | Dramatic views and a challenging trek | Hilly terrain; treks can be physically demanding. |
Treks vary daily because gorillas move. A "short" sector can still involve a long walk and a "hard" sector can be easy on the day.
How to Choose
If you are travelling from Queen Elizabeth, the Ishasha route leads naturally to Rushaga or Nkuringo. If you are coming from Kampala by road, Buhoma and Ruhija are often reached via different routes. Think about fitness, lodge preference and the rest of your itinerary, then ask us to match permits to your dates. Read driving distances and the gorilla safari packages.
